Raised on equal parts roots music and Radiohead, Fish & Bird have received praise on both sides of the Atlantic for their refreshingly uncliched writing. With their fourth album, Something In The Ether, the young Canadian 5-piece continue to reimagine folk music for a new generation. This new batch of songs digs out the echoes from tavern walls and the depths of the ocean. The band’s signature left field arrangements, thoughtful lyrics, and poignant vocal delivery are all in fine form. As with their previous effort (2011′s WCMA-nominated effort Every Whisper Is A Shout Across The Void), the upcoming album was recorded in fiddler/producer Adam Iredale-Gray‘s childhood home on Mayne Island, which has been converted into a fully functioning recording studio. Iredale-Gray, along with lead singer/banjoist Taylor Ashton, drummer Ben Kelly, guitarist Ryan Boeur, and departing member Zoe Guigueno (now a member of Boston’s Joy Kills Sorrow), gathered on the property where most of them originally met. The seclusion from the city and their history with the idyllic gulf island setting allowed them the focus and comfort to give the songs the attention they deserved. Breaks from recording were spent eating good food and canoeing in Campbell Bay.
