Hail To The King has some of the worst drum tracks i’ve ever heard…so fucking boring. nevertheless, it had some solid melodic moments of gold.

But still, how is this the same band that came up with Waking The Fallen, City of Evil, Avenged Sevenfold, and Nightmare?

Totally agree. Worst AX7 album ever. I looked forward to HTTK for 3 years, and was immensely disappointed.

It’s almost like the band went “you know guys, Portnoy kinda outshined the Rev on Nightmare…we better not let that happen again. Let’s write really boring songs with very basic drum beats.”

But seriously, it’s painfully obvious how much of the writing process was due to the Rev, and the band flat out sucks without his writing input.

Exactly. I still try to listen, almost to try to fool myself into liking it. But 80% of it is just so boring to me.

A great example is to compare The Wicked End (old AX7) with Requiem (new AX7). Two songs with similar meaning, both driven by operatic voicing. The only difference is that one kicks ass (The Wicked End), and one is very lacking and boring (Requiem). And Requiem isn’t even the worst song on the album.

It’s just…compared with the more progressive and “interesting” sound they used to have which made them who they are, the new stuff sounds like it is scared to take any risks, and comes off too straightforward for the fans of the original A7X.

I think they may have fell victim to somewhat of a commercial plague. Their fan base could only go so far if they continued writing the more intricate, interesting stuff. Now its as if everything has a predictable arrangement.

Yeah, I know. And the album is supposed to be stripped down. That doesn’t make it enjoyable. It just makes it boring for a wide selection of fans who had fallen in love with the intricacies of their previous works.

Hail to the King is a horrible album. I hope to science that this DT album is not to DT what HTTK is to A7X.

seriously bro, httk was awesome imho.. just give me a reason why httk is horrible ?

I’ll preface by saying that taste in music is totally subjective of course. I understand that there are tons of people who love HTTK, and tons who hate it.

Even further, I understand why the people who love HTTK love it.

But to lots of die-hard A7X fans, myself included, the album comes off as boring and lacks many of the very interesting elements which made A7X who they are.

Their intention for this album was indeed to make something “stripped down”, straight-forward, and pure metal/hard rock.

If I, and many others who agree with me, wanted to hear that side of A7X, we could just go listen to many other bands who have already done this.

In their previous albums, A7X always took risks, created very interesting melodies and riffs, and were what I like to call semi-progressive in their music style. Not really a true progressive band, but rather metal with some prog. elements which gave the music something fresh, something awesome, and something very attractive for fans like myself to listen to.

For that reason, their music also had a ton of replay value. Even if a few of their songs started off just “decent”, it would often open up into something amazing by the end of the song.

Take “The Wicked End” for example. The song had tons of tempo changes, an amazing guitar solo which utilized a very unique scale, it broke down and built up, and it was just awesome.

Now take Requiem from HTTK. A song about a similar concept, and also includes a choir. The song isn’t horrible, and is actually one of my better-liked off of HTTK, but it is much more straight-forward, less interesting, and honestly just does not compare in grandeur to songs like The Wicked End.

Take that example and apply it across the board, comparing HTTK to their previous works, and that is a huge reason why HTTK was a disappointment for many fans like myself.

I know, that’s why I wrote the first 2 paragraphs of the post.

You asked for a reason it was horrible. so I gave you an explanation of why some people don’t like it. :)

No disrespect toward those who like it.

Because it’s generic garbage rock. There is nothing on the album that is stellar or jumps out as original. At least 4 of the songs are blatant ripoffs of already-existing songs (2 Metallica, 1 Megadeth, 1 Iron Maiden). And the drumming is fucking boring compared to the stuff Rev and MP played on previous albums. I dunno what you think is awesome about it, everything that made A7X remotely interesting and special is completely missing on this album. How do you go from an epic like Save Me to such boring cookie-cutter garbage?

Precisely. I was thinking the same exact thing about Save Me. Was actually going to choose that song as comparison to the new album instead of The Wicked End.

Before it came out, I had accepted that HTTK may not be quite as good as Nightmare, as that album came out at a very emotionally-charged time in my life. But I didn’t ever expect to be disappointed.

just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s garbage, and they said it was supposed to be a tribute to their favorite bands, they are not gonna release nightmare everytime, they have to change, and just imagine a song like shepherd of fire with crazy ass drums.. does it seem legit ? whatever, let’s stop spamming this with a7x and see about the new dt stuff

          • benrosemberg
            September 17, 2013 at 5:49 pm

You’re defending the album like a true fanboy. Despite the fact that it’s their weakest, least inspired, most generic sounding album, you defend it like it’s amazing. You are exactly the kind of fan record labels love, cuz you’ll listen to anything they put out no matter how crappy and uninspired. Also, a tribute to your favourite band shouldn’t sound like a horribly blatant rip off.

PS I’m happy to announce the new DT is nothing like HTTK. It’s actually DT’s strongest effort since Six Degrees.

Hey Rick, thanks for cleaning up some of these fake leak posts man! You seem to be very knowledgeable about the whole leak process. May I ask you a quick question? If you had to take your absolute best educated guess, based on past leaks, and taking into consideration the early Japan release, which range of days would you say this is going to leak? Even if you can just predict a general range, like “next week”, etc…I would be very appreciative. Thanks man!

IF it doesn’t leak due to advanced copies, and if we are to base
ourselves into the copies that arrive in the stores, I would say around
September 16th or maybe a bit before that. We might be lucky though and
it leaks way before of that.

I also love JLB’s new album. It seems that his stuff ends up being so underrated. I think that a lot of his songs have a ton of commercial appeal, and would fit perfectly in movies and such. In this case, I really like that some of them sound more commercial. With DT covering the progressive side, I think it’s great to have JLB taking care of the catchy hooks and such. And also, I love that his albums are always on the harder side.

Awesome, going to check it out right now, thanks! I’ve been looking for new progressive music. What I always seem to find is awesome instrumental playing but almost always without fail, a singer who sounds way too theatrical for me. Got my fingers crossed for Haken…thanks again.

This Haken album is amazing so far! About halfway into Pareidolia, it kinda just hit me. I’ve only listened to that and Somebody so far, and Somebody is great too. The only bands I’ve really honestly been into the past 5 years or so have been DT, Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson’s solo stuff, and A7X. So this is a big deal for me. Fingers still crossed that I like the rest of the album. Thanks again!!
