Many great moments on this album, but Illumination Theory is the one that stands out most to me. That and Mangini’s drums kick major ass (both musically and the sound of them). Keep in mind when listening to his fills that his toms are set up very differently from your typical drummer.

    Being short: Didn’t like it.
Ok, I didn’t like A Dramatic Turn Of Events when I first heard neither but this time I think it’s for real.

I didnt like it either as a whole, doesnt deserve the name dream theater as the album name. Liked a dramatic a lot more, even on first time.

The first half of IT is awesome good, enemy inside is good, not much more, nothing remarkable feels b side songs, nothing stands out as a song or as a moment, IT was close but second half is a mess about taht jungle weird unnecesary stuff. Everything is better than SC or BC, everything.

If you can, try to get the 5.1 downmix of the dvd-audio (or even the dvd-audio version). It’s MUCH less compressed, and sounds awesome.

Now what!?!? I already miss checking this frigging site each 5 seconds! Ha-ha-ha, jk, jk. Well my friends, this album is one more proven reason why I LOVE this band with all my heart. I guess we’ll probably see each other again in one month for Live at Luna Park. For those of you who may have disliked the album: Give it time, let it grow on you!

So excited for Luna Park! I agree with your sentiment…I really do miss coming here 25 times a day checking for the leak, regardless of the fact that I signed up for an email notification.

But as you said, only another month or so until we can get excited for something else!

    TRACKS REVIEW TIME :P :

1-false awakening suite : Easily the best intro for an album they made.. that’s epic dude, everything about it is epic, and it also perfectly fits The enemy inside, the feeling you have when you listen to this is just incredible ! 10/10

2-The enemy inside : I WAS BLOWN AWAY when i first listened to this ! man, this is AWESOME.. it has some train of thoughts influences, but more awesome.. the lyrics are also awesome ”i’m a burden i’m a travesty, i’m a prisoner of regret” this obviously talks about a soldier who just came from war, and have some regret about it..I really didn’t expect mangini could do stuffs better than this in the rest of the album.. the solo is one of the best petrucci has ever made.. 10/10

3-The looking glass : the second worst song of the album.. but dude.. it’s FUCKING AWESOME ! it has a ”the best of times” vibe to me.. the best part of this is probably the chorus.. i’d call it a ”moment of heavy light” personally :P the bass lines are awesome too.. i didn’t like the solo though.. and that’s why it’s the worst one to me, i’m not saying it’s bad, but the album has so much awesome song :p 8/10
4-Enigma machine: a creepy ass intro.. a nice instrumental.. mangini put out his best here.. he proves he can replace portnoy, i like rudess’ job here.. the 3:45 guitar work reminds me of the count of tuscany.. not their best instrumental, but definitely an awesome one 9/10
5-The bigger picture: so here we are with the song that SUPRISED ME.. i didn’t think i’d heard this kind of MASTERPIECE EVER.. waw ! the best song of the album to me, the lyrics are just AWESOME, you MUST close your eyes when listening to this.. you forget about everything.. i cried when i first listened to this.. a pure piece of dream theater.. labrie’s voice is breathtaking 10/10
6-Behind the veil : probably the worst song on the album, i’m not saying it’s bad, it’s good, BUT it didn’t blew me away like the others songs, i like rudess and petrucci solos though 7.5/10
7-Surrender to Reason : This is the ”reason” why i love dream theater, every single member is amazing.. petrucci is the best guitarist, rudess the best keyboardist, mangini is an amazing drummer, john myung is the best bassist, and MOST OF ALL, labrie is THE BEST VOCALIST EVER AFTER BRUCE DICKINSON AND AXL ROSE, those who say it’s wrong have problems.. this song is a masterpiece, easily 10/10
8-Along for the ride : awesome ! nothing else to say, specially the lyrics, ”i will not live under a shadow of fear..” this deserves a 10 as well as for most of the album, BUT no, it’s way tooooo short, so i’ll give it a 9 >.< 9/10
9-Illumination Theory : i said The bigger picture was the best song of the album, but this is not a song, ''Illumination Theory'' is more than a song, It's AWESOMENESS ITSELF in a musical form… 22 minutes of pure dream theater.. what else ?! this deserves more than 10/10.. way more, but it's not possible :/ so 10/10

album review : their best piece of music after scenes from a memory, images and words and DTOE, an astonishing 9/10 :D

Honestly this album is seriously high on my list for top albums of the year. Its not good, not bad, its incredible! (IMO) Mike Mangini is certainly a good replacement, and he proves he is a member now on this album. The intro “False Awakening Suite” is totally a symphonic metal demon that is gonna be awesome to open up their shows. Songs like “The Enemy Inside”, “Enigma Machine”, and “Behind the Veil” are metal powerhouses. I so love the huge Rush influence they used on “The Looking Glass”, its like if DT made their own “Limelight”. “Along for the Ride” is the obvious full ballad on this album, but honestly its a great melody to play before the epic. The big 3 for me are “The Bigger Picture”, “Surrender to Reason”, and the epic “Illumination Theory”. “The Bigger Picture” is incredibly detailed, mixing a powering metal song with sheer beauty. “Surrender to Reason” totally brings out the old DT and mixes it with the new. “Illumination Theory” has to be the most beautiful song I’ve heard this year. Its got everything. It has the great thunderous solos from Jordan and John, and also has James LaBrie at some really high moments. Right here, everyone is at their best and this song is worth buying the album alone for me. IMO this is my favorite album as a whole since “Octavarium”, and the magic has been restored for me, as I am going to listen to this for like…ever.

Japanese releases always get additional tracks/instrumentals/features with their releases. It’s very common in that market and used to entice purchasing.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the album to begin with. Don’t get me wrong, I thought it was good, I just thought there were chunks where it was rather lacking in substance (except illumination theory). It was released here in Australia on Friday so naturally, I bought it (2 disc deluxe edition).
I finally had a chance to listen to it today and now I’ve had a chance to listen to the 5.1 mix direct from the DVD, my whole opinion has changed. It’s (IMO) one of their best albums. I was missing a lot of the dynamics from the album with the mp3 rip. I’ve never heard an album sound so different between CD and mp3. It really is an incredible album and I highly suggest grabbing the deluxe for the 5.1 mix, you won’t regret it, it’s not overly mixed, very balanced and the sound is perfect.

It comes as DVD-Audio in the deluxe edition format. If you’re looking for the best possible fidelity I sincerely encourage to purchase the HD tracks from a company on the same name. They sell the 24 bit 96kHz resolution files which are exact replicas from the master tracks. I just bought it and I’m AMAZED with the difference,

Hi, so not possible to get 5.1 mix online by buying.

I bought the cd on amazon but it seems the deluxe version is the only version, didnt find a regular version it says it has 2 disks. I downloaded a flac version from getmetal.org, is that a different flac from hd tracks?

Yes. Normally, internet-found FLAC files are exact copies of the audio resolution contained on a CD: 44.1Khz-16 bits-1.441Kbps, which means that someone with the original CD ripped it off making an exact copy. No higher audio resolution can be imprinted on a CD than the settings described above. Obviously this resolution is quite superior than ”lossy” compressed MP3 @320Kbps.

Whereas HD files are exact copies of the master tracks used by the band in the studio. For this album settings are: 96kHz-24bits-4.608Kbps. This kind of audio resolution can not be contained on a CD and normally this files are just marketed for audiophiles through special retailers such as the one I mentioned you about on my previous message.

The reasons why you can’t buy the 5.1 mix online for download are: This type of files need special decoding to be played, (its 5.1 not stereo), file size would be way too big for regular downloads and lastly, chances are this mix is done in 24 bits audio resolution. Mainly, for these 3 reasons this kind of mixes are contained only on DVD Audio format.

I’m not sure whether the 5.1 mix was done from high resolution audio files or regular CD quality files. I’ll figure that out when I get my hands on my own copy. Meanwhile, I wanted to be 100% sure to experience this album in High-Def, and the only way to do that was purchasing the HD files.

          I’m a mastering engineer btw,

          Hopefully this helped!

When you get your copy, you’ll be able to play the DVD Audio disc on a regular DVD player with 5.1 audio system. Remember this disc contains the 5.1 mix. Even some DVD players have an option to reduce 5.1 audio to stereo.
There’s some folks on the internet trying to decode the 5.1 mix to stereo but its not easy to decode such high rates with absolute fidelity without having proper tools… let’s see how that goes. But if you have the HD files… nothing gets better than that. Congrats on your purchase!

Thanks it helped a lot and already got them on HD, I got the Dramatic turn on events as well on hd and liked it a lot on that site when it was released. I’d really love to hear this one on 5.1 so bad nobody has extracted the audio from the dvd to some 5.1 audio format. I already bought the deluxe edition on amazon but it says 1 to 4 weeks to delivery.
