Fun fact: three years ago we featured a Pyrrhon track on Volume 1 of NYC Sucks, a completely free compilation we released to highlight some of our favorite bands from the NYC area. They kicked ass then, they kicked ass on An Excellent Servant But a Terrible Master — the album they released later that year — and they sure as hell kick ass now, freshly inked deal with Relapse Records in their collective back pocket and a new album on the way.
“Balkanized” is the first track we’re hearing from Pyrrhon’s new album The Mother of Virtues, coming April 1, and it’s a doozy. It’s got that trademark death metal pummel that made this band’s early Fever Kingdoms EP so appealing to us in the first place, but it’s also got a newly emphasized skronky, experimental side that started developing on Excellent Servant: think Gorguts, Dysrhythmia, Ulcerate, etc. No surprise that the band tapped Ryan Jones (Today is the Day) to record the effort and Colin Marston to master it.
