Yeah, we know, Swiss people ought to be sober-minded, comfy, perhaps a little rural. But what does that even mean? As if every Brit would devour his afternoon tea, as if every German would feed on a diet of potatoes and sauerkraft entirely.
Scream Your Name, after all, have a very distinct conception of what they want to be. This turns out to be loud, wild and brimful with emotions – and is not neccessarily connected to any stupid cliché.
"If one conception holds true for us", says drummer Miguel Müller, "it's us being extremely dilligent and disciplined".
Indeed: The post-hardcore-troupe from the beautiful Emmental already brought themselves to attention one year ago with the international re-release of their debut "Scream Your Name". It hailed rave reviews and gigs – with no support outside the band whatsoever! Gone were the silence and tranquillity in the valley of cheese when a blasting Metalcore beast was awakened.
Well, the Swiss can be different after all. And they are just about to prove how different this is going to be.
Recently signed by Swiss label Deepdive Records, they are about to unleash their second record. Entitled “Face to Face”, this one has become a massive, a distinct body of work oscillating between metalcore, rock, alternative and the cunning use of electronic influences. This album will certainly wipe out any of the cumbersome comparisons and once and for all create their very own drawer. The songs are one of a kind, vary between full of growling rage and melodic vastness.
"We like to look left and right", Miguel states, "although we look after our very own sound very carefully".
This sound has once again been crafted by the band alone – cladding the tracks into an insanely thick and organic skin.
Be it uplifting and fast as in "Reverse", trippy, electronic and suddenly detonating as in "Stronger" or displaying a passion of brutal riffs ("The Blue House"): this album displays a young band on their way to the top – showing along the way how the stagnating Metalcore universe can be infused with some fresh impulses.
Still, working in the studio is only one side of the coin for the post-hardcore-hopefuls.
"It's the concerts that are essential to us", Miguel begins to rave. No wonder that Scream Your Name did a lot in this area in recent years. Having played tours in Europe and Indonesia, they also formed a part of the Vans Warped Tour and managed to secure a gig in Los Angeles as well as at the prestigious Greenfield Festival! With “Face to Face” in hand, this surely will only be the beginning.
After all, Scream Your name are far from your typical weekend musicians.
"Though it's important to have fun", states Miguel, "it's essential for us to take everything band related extremely serious. What we do, we do properly. With ambition and discipline". They held true to this statement when they produced their debut at own expenses in the famous Principal Studios and they do so every time they hit a stage.
"As soon as the first song starts, we enter the zone", the drummer explains. "We are a unit, a band of brothers that's very close. It wouldn't work any other way", he stresses.
Scream Your Name are on the verge of becoming one of the few Swiss post-hardcore-bands to kick off internationally.
No wonder the message behind the band's name and the album is of the uplifting sort: "Be true to yourself, don't back down and fight for your ideals".
On a record dominated by conflicts of various sorts, this message is also important for the band.
"Our music delivers an insight into our concerns, thoughts and dreams". This is what turned the band into this indestructible unit – and this is what will urge them forward. Swiss precision is no cliché after all.
