In a scene overrun by cliche, generic song structures, The Room Colored Charlatan‘s debut full-length, The Veil That Conceals, is a refreshingly innovative record that incorporates their influences without being burdened by them. To be released through Subliminal Groove Records on April 15, I am quite confident that this record will be one of my top ten records of 2016.
Starting with the atmospheric “An Awareness,” The Room Colored Charlatan provides the space for their guitarist/producer Jason Seymour‘s singing to introduce the record in a way similar to “The Source” by The Contortionist. Though TRCC‘s discography up until this point has been an innovative catalogue of progressive deathcore, The Veil That Conceals puts a new focus on melody and atmosphere that is complemented by the presence of singing, both from Seymour and the appearances of various guests. It is this new direction that, to me, propels TRCC‘s new record to the forefront of modern progressive metal.
Three of the record’s seven tracks form a trilogy. “Perception I: Awareness” opens with TRCC‘s signature mix of technical rhythms and melodic tapped leads. A compelling mix of brutal screams and haunting vocal melodies lends to the epic, dramatic dynamics of the song. Subtle electronic instrumentation adds a refreshing element to the track. By the time the song ends in an anthemic mix of metalcore chorus and post rock atmospherics, it is very clear that TRCC is blazing new territory for djent and deathcore.
