Released this past Thursday, Compton A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre, might not have been the Detox album fans had been waiting for – But nonetheless, it ended Dr. Dre’s 16 year hiatus. While it’s only been a couple of days, the reviews are starting to pour in. We’ve gathered a few select opinions below.
“Eminem’s cameo on ‘Medicine Man’ is technically superb, but the content – “I even make the bitches I rape come”, and so on – somehow comes over both hateful and boring. In this regard at least, Dre won’t be missed. But it’s hard to deny ‘Compton’ is brilliantly constructed, a masterclass in 21st century hip-hop.”
– NME (who gave the album a 7/10 score)
“It’s good don’t get me wrong, feels more like a party album due to the amount of other artist included. I am a big Dre fan, waited till 2AM this morning to listen. When you make the best hip hop album of all time 2001, how do you follow that up, how do you beat perfection and that has always been Dres problem.”

“For years, Dr. Dre was writing Compton’s story primarily through music; Mr. Lamar has made it the subject of his advanced-placement parables. Both men’s approach to their hometown is different, and personal — and here, for the first time, they’re truly in sync.”
“It adds up to an album by turns confounding and enthralling. It’s no Detox. It’s something realer, and better.”
– Rolling Stone (who gave the album 4 out of 5 stars)
“I’d want a bit more lyrical variation from them. Production wise it’s still great though, it’s got an old school feel but in the style of today’s hip-hop. The variation is also there, it’s not an album that bores you when you’re halfway through. I’m thinking a 6 [out of ten] so far.”

“His skills have always been about immediacy, the grandiose, a sixth sense for the universal. On Compton, that’s still intact.”

The album generated a ton of traffic to our site, and became the most popular album on the site since it was announced. And while I’ve seen people express their frustration over Detox not seeing a release, the critics seem united – This is a great return of the legend. But what are your thoughts? We’ll be reviewing the album ourselves, and would love to include your comments, on our podcast.
