The Sun and The Sea, from British singer songwriter Hollie April is the perfect song for a late summer day, a vulnerable and delicate song lifted to great heights by April’s voice, which flies effortlessly on top of the minimal guitar and backing vocals.
April is an up and coming performer, spending the past few years emerging as a hidden gem at various festivals and industry showcases. Her vocal range in particular is incredible, something that can be readily heard on The Sun and The Sea. The song, from April’s EP Marionette burns slowly, a haunting love song that really showcases the amazing range in her voice. A demo version of the song shows April’s voice off even better, with the minimal production stripped down even further to a raw and powerful torch song.
The simplicity of April’s music is refreshing in an era where production on most music tends to veer toward filling every moment of a song with as much sound as possible. On “The Sun and The Sea”, April shows that she can do more with her voice and a guitar than a lot of musicians can do with an entire studio team behind them.
Now we’re waiting for her to collaborate with a bold and creative producer to elevate and give her voice a more daring context.
