2015 has been an amazing year in music – A stellar mix of mainstream and indie acts, having released albums like there was no tomorrow. From Kendrick Lamar to Death Grips. And even if you don’t agree that all of them were worth the hype, just the number of great, if not excellent, albums is staggering. Looking back, I had even forgotten that Florence + the Machine, Noel Gallagher, Sufjan Stevens and Sleater-Kinney was this year. And I’ve got plenty of new artists I’ve discovered, piling them up to prepare for My Best of 2015 list.
But before I start rambling on, we’ve got one and a half months left. This week, the world is preparing for Adele’s comeback – I might as well shut down the site except 25’s album page. Although Tech N9ne fans might disagree. But somehow I don’t think there’s a crossover between Adele and Tech N9ne fans.
Speaking of UK popstars, Coldplay is finally releasing their latest venture – A Head Full of Stars. Personally, I hope they get back to the glory days of Viva La Vida or even any of the previous album, and not head into Mylo Xyloto or Ghost Stories territories.
A lot of people appreciate Black Keys member Dan Auerbach’s production skills, hence I’m excited for Cage The Elephant’s December release Tell Me I’m Pretty. A creative mix of 50’s production – Wrapped up in pop, punk, alternative rock infused songs.
Massive RCA signed G-Easy is dropping his hip hop album When It’s Dark Out. It’s the slick, good looking mainstream MC dealing with celebrity and fame. And even if that’s not appealing, the album features a line-up worth looking into, including Keyshia Cole and E-40.
And if that’s not interest, go experimental and dive into the void with some drone. Sunn O))) has you covered with forthcoming Kannon. And while you’re there – you might as well check out Baroness’ Purple LP. If not for the crazy good melodic rock, but for the artwork alone.
Then there’s Toydrum, which I’ve featured before. Louder Than War recently published their album review stating that The Evengalist is “one of the best records I’ve heard this year”, so even if it’s not out until December 9th – Gear up and pre-order the vinyl, as its price has been lowered. Dark, but unforgettably beautiful. Stand out track Whirlwind Of Rubbish is embedded above.
And no, metal heads – I’ve not forgotten about you. But there’s no date for Dream Theater’s upcoming album, except a track list and a tour. And Megadeth’s LP got slipped into January (but man has it received some great reviews). And Metallica stated that their next album might get a 2016 release.
And then there’s SWISH. Also Frank Ocean. And maybe Death Grips? I know the deal, I get the questions every single day – When is Kanye West album out and what is up with Frank Ocean, as he promised an album this summer. It’s unlikely that any of these will drop this year, even if a Christmas Day surprise release or leak would be nice. Still, we’ve got King Push on Christmas Day.
But we’re getting greedy – I’m fine without them. 2015 was and is amazing. But what did I forget to mention that is due out this November and December?
