Girls! We need your help!
Update: The podcast episode has now been recorded and published.
Original story: I’m reaching out to our female visitors. I know you’re out there! This weekend we’re doing a feature on the very broad topic of women in the music industry. But I also want to include you, the listener and what your feelings towards the music, artists, lyrics, music videos and the music scene. Please help us out and contribute to this comment section or email directly to me and Louise who are hosting the podcast.
Nice!!!
Great topic. Stoked to hear this new podcast episode.
Why only reach out to female visitors? Frankly, it’s been my observation that women often are NOT the biggest fans of female artists… Just sayin’…
That’s an interesting point of view! Can you give an example?
We’re listening…
I’m only speaking from my personal experience, over decades of music fandom and female friendships. Certainly this is not an absolute truth but it IS a generality I’ve observed and discussed with friend groups over the years. Also, to be clear, I’m not referring to the Madonna/Spice Girls/P!nk/Katy Perry/Taylor Swift “pop”-type acts but:
rather the grittier, less-radio-prominent acts like Debbie Harry/Chrissie Hynde/Kate Bush/Liz Phair/Kathleen Hanna/Amy Winehouse/Sarah Barthel/FKA twigs-etc.
Clearly female artists have female fans – lots of them. But there is a bias they face. Even Lilith Fair couldn’t survive. I’m not suggesting I know why these artists have to face sometimes harsher criticism from women fans. Perhaps it’s connected to the same bias that’s often faced by the prettiest girl at school/work/the nightclub. Or as the saying goes:
“Don’t try to understand women. Women understand women… and they hate each other.”
I didn’t mean it as a trick question! (sorry if it sounded like that!) It’s just that, from my personal experience (we all talk from our personal experiences, nobody’s got an answer!) I never witnessed a particularly harsh treatment for female artist by female music fans! Yeah, I read many awful comments on FKA twigs by Twilight-obsessed girls but nothing about her music, just jealousy.
Looking forward to this, I’d say a solid 55% of my music library consists of female artists and female-fronted bands.
