Dan Bejar's band Destroyer has announced a new EP, Five Spanish Songs, to be released November 29 through Merge. All of the songs were written by Spanish musician Antonio Luque, of the band Sr. Chinarro.
Bejar was attracted to Spanish language singing after feeling disillusioned with English. He offered the following statement:
It was 2013. The English language seemed spent, despicable, not easily singable. It felt over for English; good for business transactions, but that's about it. The only other language I know is Spanish, and the only Spanish songs I really know are those of Sr. Chinarro, led by Antonio Luque. I've been a decades-long fan of how he conducted his affairs, his strange words, his melodies that have always felt so natural (this is important), his bitter songs about painting the light. Something about them, I knew I could do it...
Along with Bejar, the EP includes contributions from Nicolas Bragg and John Collins of Destroyer, as well as David Carswell, Stephen Hamm, and Josh Wells of Black Mountain.
I can’t wait for this. I actually bought the tickets for this EP’s tour months ago, and I’m going to see Dan Bejar in Philadelphia next month. Shit is going to be so cash.
