Kevin Morby's seen some things. Morby, Woods bassist and Babies co-founder, has been everywhere, man: from seedy green rooms and cramped vanseats to the tops of mountains. Morby's collected travelogue arrives in the form of "Miles, Miles, Miles", a drowsy, faintly Byrdsy number from Morby's solo debut, Harlem River, due November 26 on Woodsist. Over a few timeworn chords, Morby, in halting voice, retraces his steps-- the hollers he fell into, the "devil hung up on that cross," the evil he's come upon. "Miles" ambles along like a drifter just passing through, its dusty organs and chiming guitars eventually making space for a wayfaring solo. "If you knew just how far I'd traveled," Morby begins, then trails off just as quickly, "Oh then, maybe then, only then." Morby, wizened and weary, sings "Miles" with hesitation in his throat, as though he's brought back a few hard-sought truths he's still not quite sure he can share.
