Stéphanie Sokolinski better known by her stage name Soko (sometimes stylized as SoKo) is a French singer.
Her debut album is due to be released in February 2012 following the singles ‘I Thought I Was An Alien’ and ‘First Love Never Die.’
Nylon Interview:
With your focus less on movies these days, what other projects have been keeping you busy?
[My debut album] I Thought I Was An Alien is actually going to be released in the US on June 11, and then I'm finishing a new record in LA right now. It's called My Dreams Dictate My Reality, and I hope it's going to come out really soon.
Since you're already working on your second album, is it weird to be promoting your first album?
Oh yeah, I've totally moved on [laughs]. It's really weird, actually, because I feel like this first record was so personal and emotional and very dark and very sad, and it was very hard for me to perform it. I love playing shows more than anything in the world, but it had to be a very quiet audience and in very intimate venues; I couldn't play an intimate set singing about my father's death in front of drunk people. I'd have panic attacks, like, "I can't do this!" [The new album] is way less acoustic, it's super dream popish and some are almost post-punk.
she’s been putting out some teasers on her instagram account since last year (like little parts of the recording and mixing process and the title of some tracks). for now, we can for sure know that ross robinson is the producer and some of the possible tracks (listed in a ‘what’s-left-to-record’ chart) are:
peter pan syndrome
my dreams dictate my reality
ocean (which seems to be, now, ocean of tears)
monster love
temporary mood swings
my precious
who wears the pants
my baby, my lady, my love
a quiet storm
i cannot be bothered
bad poetry
pale copies
i hope you miss me
meet your idols
keaton’s song (which she played in a cardinal session last year)
i come in peace
fantastic planet
visions
nervous breakdown.
a north american tour was announced for june (starting june 1st), so we can expect, at least, a release date till there (i hope).
oh, there’s been uploaded a teaser of ‘nervous breakdown’ on her youtube account recently as well. and the monster love video was released (combined with ‘i just want to make it new with you’ – because she was releasing ‘i thought i was an alien’ in north america by then) in last year’s june.
she also released a song called ‘love letter’ inspired by niki de saint phalle’s book “my love, where shall we make love?” along with a video through nowness.
about the new record, she said to galore magazine in february that ‘it’s a lot more punk, post/punk than the first record (…) all about dreams obviously, and wanting to be a child with big dreams forever. also, there’s a bunch of synth strings, kind of 80′s sounding.’
