In her review of London indie-pop outfit Still Corners' Sub Pop debut, 2011's slight Creatures of an Hour, Lindsay Zoladz accurately noted that the band were talented at "fashioning the most familiar signifiers of 60s style in a contemporary frame". Perhaps that's why it was so surprising when the band unleashed their most recent single, "Fireflies", last September; a glistening synth-pop anthem, the song found the band exploring new territory and straying from their previously established Broadcast-alike sound.
It looks like they're going to be heading further in that direction from the sound of new song "Berlin Lovers", taken from the band's forthcoming LP Strange Pleasures, out May 7 via Sub Pop. The song is less spangly than fellow album cut "Fireflies", instead using a wobbly synth juxtaposed against lead singer Tessa Murray's wispy vocals. The results are reminiscent of the slight uneasiness created on Creatures of an Hour's better moments, but despite the atmospheric pressure, "Berlin Lovers" continues in the more straightforwardly pop-minded vein of "Fireflies", so it'll be interesting to hear where they take this sound next.
I don’t normally get into this genre but I look forward to this album and seeing where they take their sound. I am really into Murray’s vocalizing which seem to mesmerize me.
I’ve listened to this album so many times. I still can’t believe it doesn’t come out for another two weeks.
Great album.
