Still Life Still returns August 20 with sophomore album Mourning Trance. Almost four years removed from debut Girls Come Too, the band is also pleased to present its new video for lead track "Burial Suit."
"This video is a glimpse into my family's memories: birthdays, travels, and everyday life growing up in the west end of Toronto," says drummer Aaron Romaniuk. "(The footage was) filmed from 1960 to 1970 by my grandmother (Stella Romaniuk) and my grandfather (Paul Romaniuk) who passed away before I was born.”
"Burial Suit" is available for free download via RollingStone.com or Arts & Crafts' SoundCloud.
"Burial Suit" was always the starting point for our upcoming LP," explains vocalist Brendan Saarinen. "We wrote it in the dead of winter after a year of demoing and scrapping a lot of songs. It's about breaking rituals and routines; how love can take you to strange, sometimes messed up places. When we finished recording it, there was a weird vibe in the air, like we had started fresh but knew we'd always been there."
Mourning Trance is a record about loss and family, but also about coping and finding a way to enjoy life through all of the exhaustion. It's an album about waking up every morning, working eight hours, and still finding a way to celebrate surviving another day.
In Still Life Still's case, that way was the only one the band knows - writing and playing music with best friends.
The album was recorded and produced in Toronto by Alex Bonenfant (Crystal Castles, Metz) the result of that process is a weird, beautiful pop record, inspired by, and in honour of the brilliance and absurdity of real life. Those bittersweet experiences continue to be what drives the band and record.
