On Saturday night, The Flaming Lips sent out a press release announcing the release of Flaming Side of the Moon, a new companion album to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon.
According to the press release, listeners are encouraged to listen to Flaming Side of the Moon and Dark Side of the Moon simultaneously. “For ideal listening conditions, fans are encouraged to seek out the original Alan Parsons’ engineered quadraphonic LP mix of Dark Side, but it will work with the album on any format,” the press release adds.
What’s more, Flaming Side of the Moon “was also carefully crafted to sync up perfectly with the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz.”
The album is apparently available now through all participating digital outlets, and a limited pressing of 100 vinyl copies will be distributed to friends and family of the band. The only thing is we’re thinking this is just one big April Fools’ Day prank.
The Lips have previously released a full covers album of Dark Side of the Moon in 2009. The press release made no mention of how the two releases differ, nor did it include a tracklist or any other specifics. Just an asinine request for fans to get an Alan Parsons mix of the LP only available in a Dark Side of the Moon box set.
Not only that, but The Lips have made no mention of the project; rather they’re known to be working on a covers album of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Flaming Side of the Moon is also nowhere to be found on iTunes.
Can’t find the leak anywhere…
