As far as album announcements go, it's hard to be any subtler than Jenny Lewis' latest. As Stereogum points out, the news comes from a few facts from a few sources. First, she's booked at a bunch of festivals this summer, which would be a tad odd if she didn't have anything new to perform or promote. Second, her Austin City Limits bio says, "Her anticipated third solo album is slated for release on Warner Bros. Records in July 2014." And finally, a recent interview with the Charleston City Paper reveals that the LP is called The Voyager.
"I worked on these songs for a long time so there's no stone unturned, lyrically," she told the paper about her third solo album, and first since 2008's Acid Tongue. "I thought about them while walking on the mountain near my house I thought about them while flying on airplanes. I thought about them while lying awake with terrible insomnia. I finished them standing in line at Vons. While I was brushing my teeth. I was obsessed. So I feel like they're done. My poem is finished."
The Voyager was largely produced in California by Ryan Adams and his partner, Mike Viola, and recorded at Adams' Pax Am studio. "Ryan and I didn’t know each other very well before this album," Lewis told Rolling Stone. "We had hardly even listened to one another’s music, to be honest. But I trusted the vision, and Ryan ended up being the person to get me over the fear of finishing something I'd been working on for so long." Beck also contributed production, as did Johnathan Rice, with whom Lewis released 2010's I'm Having Fun Now.
She also talked about why the album took so long to come out. "Making The Voyager got me through one of the most difficult periods of my life," she told Rolling Stone. "After Rilo Kiley broke up and a few really intense personal things happened, I completely melted down. It nearly destroyed me. I had such severe insomnia that, at one point, I didn’t sleep for five straight nights. Many of the songs on The Voyager came out of the need to occupy my mind in the moments when I just couldn't shut down."
