The Walkmen have parted ways for the time being (aside from that NBA All-Star Weekend party). Walkmen co-writer/multi-instrumentalist Walter Martin will release his new solo LP We're All Young Together May 13 via Family Jukebox. Check out "Sing to Me" featuring Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O above.
The album also features guest spots from Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner, the National's Matt Berninger, Martin's Walkmen bandmates Hamilton Leithauser and Matt Barrick, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's Alec Ounsworth, and others.
(Walkmen frontman Leithauser is also currently working on a solo album with members of Vampire Weekend, the Shins, and Fleet Foxes. And bandmate Peter Matthew Bauer will release his solo album Liberation! this summer as well.)
According to a press release, Martin began writing the songs on his new record when the Walkmen were finishing Heaven, which was also when his wife was pregnant with their first child. He calls this one "a family record":
I began to imagine a record I really wanted to hear: something new and original that captured the essence of early rock 'n' roll - innocent but mischievous, romantic but funny, and unabashedly sweet. It wasn't that I wanted to write songs to suit my new situation as a parent, it was more that parenthood made relevant writing the kind of songs I've always loved most.
