Baroness' last album Yellow & Green came out in July 2012. A month later, while on tour in England, the band was involved in a bus accident that left nine people injured. But by summer 2013, they were back on the road. Now, the band has announced a new album.

Purple is out December 18 via the band's newly formed label Abraxan Hymns. The album was produced by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Sleater-Kinney). Watch an animated clip for the track "Chlorine & Wine" below. The image above is just one quadrant of the full album cover art, which will be revealed later.

Following the accident, drummer Allen Blickle and bassist Matt Maggioni left the band. In the current Baroness lineup, guitarist/vocalists John Baizley and Pete Adams are joined by bassist/keyboardist Nick Jost and drummer Sebastian Thomson (of Trans Am).

A North American tour will be announced soon. The band plays the Reading and Leeds festivals in England this weekend.

Baizley said of the new album in a statement:

After releasing a lengthy and investigative record like Yellow & Green we all felt that we needed to make something much more direct and immediate. We wanted to write with our normal focus on artistry, balanced against an increased level of energy and focus. It was important for us to write our new songs with the type of enthusiasm and expressiveness that could act as a counterpoint to the album’s dark themes. As a result, the music came out in an intense, heavy and sonically captivating in a new way, which was important, loathe, as we are to fall into any kind of complacency pitfall or formulaic songwriting routine. Purple is the most fully realized representation of our intention as a band; considering the amount of physical and mental energy spent writing it, we have accomplished something which would have seemed impossible to us a couple of years ago.

Seeing that they’re releasing it on their own new label, Abraxan Hymns, would that mean it is possible to leak sooner, later, or not at all, comparing to Relapse that did a fine job with Yellow & Green, which leaked somewhat between 2 weeks earlier?

I think overall it doesn’t matter that it’s on their own imprint now, last couple of years leak times seem to have reduced quite a bit in general, I would think its just everyone slowly figuring out the best procedures to prevent / delay leaking for as long as possible. I’m guessing this one won’t surface until at least a week before release if that. I hope I’m wrong :)

I wouldn’t bet on it. I just saw them last night and asked about the new album, they aren’t selling it at shows yet or playing anything they haven’t already released.

Of course they aren’t selling it at shows before the release date (hope it was awesome btw, seeing them this week as well).

It used to be that leaks popped up pretty early because of promo copies getting blatantly ripped and uploaded. Now labels are wise to that and watermark their promos much like movie studios watermark confidential scripts.

So I’d guess these days most times it just comes down to when the physical media (CD’s) ships to stores, once that happens it’s out of the label/band’s control.

A couple of record clubs that included this album preorder in their store will be shipping a little ahead of the release date, I think, so some people might have physical copies before the 18th. Can’t wait!

That’s cool, I pre-ordered through Pledge Music but there are rumblings they aren’t going to get the LP’s out for delivery on the 18th. 9 days to go I would say it’s gonna leak pretty shortly, seeing them live on Friday can’t wait.

Yep they’ve done a good job on it, I reckon if you can keep it under wraps until less than a week prior to release that’s a big win. Units will have to start arriving at record stores in the next day or two so it will pop up soon, perhaps they’re going to put it up as an official stream, we’ll see.

My local record store in Oslo put the album for sale monday 14th, so my girlfriend bought it. They sold some copies before the pulled them back from the shelves. I like it! A lot!
