Alt-pop trio Strange Names finished recording their debut album, Use Your Time Wisely, in their hometown of Minneapolis, but after they relocated to New York City they did it all over again. That perfectionist quality shines through on Wisely, which seamlessly combines the nervy melodicism of New Wave with the taut rhythms (and slap-happy bass tones) of ’80s funk-pop and manages to make a retro-heavy formula sound bracingly new. Odds are they’re going to become a Big Thing by the time summer hits, especially since their new single “Ricochet” has “massive summer party jam” written all over it in big day-glo letters.
