Wirral rock & roll band The Coral are to reform and headline Liverpool Sound City 2016.

The five-piece will release Distance Inbetween, their first album of new material in six years and headline Sound City on Sunday 29 May 2016.

The band, who had 8 top 30 singles and six top 20 albums, were the figureheads of the Merseyside revival of bands including The Zutons, Basement, Bandits and Stands in the mid-2000s.

Along with the new album, the band will tour the UK and Europe for the first time since 2011, including dates at Manchester’s Albert Hall and London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire in March.

The line up consists original members James Skelly (vocals, guitar), Nick Power (keys), Paul Duffy (bass), Ian Skelly (drums) plus former Zuton Paul Molloy who replaced original lead guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones.

Downbeat isn’t the right word. They started doing more ‘serious’ and heartfelt songs, with a sort of Burt Bacharach vibe to them. Yet still with insanely catchy hooks. While I do prefer the sheer mentalness of their early work (their debut LP is still in my top five ever) I like the direction they’re still going in as I’m the same age as them so feel in growing with them.

Great album this by the way. Glad to have them back.
