Villagers are an Irish indie folk band from Dublin, formed in 2008 and consisting of Conor O'Brien, Tommy McLaughlin, Danny Snow, James Byrne and Cormac Curran.
Recorded in one day in July 2015 at London's RAK Studio and released on 8th January 2016, 'Where Have You Been All My Life?' is a takes material from five years of Villagers' songwriting and distils them into one flowing narrative
Among the songs that have been re-imagined are tracks from the all three previous Villagers' albums as well as a new recording of 'Memoir' (written by O'Brien for Charlotte Gainsbourg's 2011 album Stage Whisper, but never recorded by Villagers until now) and a version of 'Witchita Lineman' (written by Jimmy Webb and popularised by Glen Campbell.
The unique nature of these arrangements is due in no small part to the musicians in the room at the time of recording: Cormac Curran on grand piano and analogue synthesizer, Danny Snow on double bass, Mali Llywelyn on harp, mellotron and vocals, and Gwion Llewelyn on drums, flugelhorn and vocals. The result is a lush, harmony-laden and vibrant document of a time and a place.
The recordings are all first or second takes, and the immediacy of the occasion was part of the magic that day, live and unadorned by overdubs or studio trickery, which combine to make this Villagers' most intense, but satisfying, session to date.
