Howe Gelb is an American singer-songwriter, musician and record producer based in Tucson, Arizona. He is perhaps best known for his work with Giant Sand, a collaborative ensemble with a revolving membership of which Gelb is the most constant.
Future Standards, as the name suggests, is an attempt at writing a batch of tunes that could last through the ages with the relative structure of what has become known as 'standards': "The likes of Cole Porter and Hoagy Carmichael done up by Frank Sinatra or Billie Holiday," suggests Howe. "Julie London had a lot to do with it."
Taking the outsider view of early gospel and rhythm and blues both part of the American musical socialization that Gelb touched on with 2006’s ‘Sno Angel’, he’s now added elements of jazz with The Howe Gelb Piano Trio and duets at times with the equally laconic Lonna Kelley.
