For her new concept EP, Desert Strike, Fatima Al Qadiri taps into her childhood experience of growing up in Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm, and contrasts that reality with the sobering fact that, just a year after the military raids, she and her sister owned and played a FPS game called “Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf” ad nauseam. The album is an extension of this theme, and explores the boundaries of detachment and engagement in both real and virtual experience—the terrifying byproduct of a desensitized mind. The first single, “Ghost Raid,” is named after bombing raids by “The Ghost,” the F-117A Nighthawk stealth fighter, and mines grimey, militaristic beats with a breathy, ameliorative coos.
