A review I wrote for this album (appearing in FFWD Weekly): Lowell has pulled out all the stops to create a vogue indie-pop album jammed with fun rhythms, quirky singing and trendy themes. We Loved Her Dearly smacks of charm with exultant trills and explosive beats.
The music is adorned with synth and electro-beats, placing it firmly in the indie-pop arena, something like Young Galaxy or Emily Haines. Her music is all sugar-coated, cute and irresistible.
The element that stands out most and makes We Loved Her Dearly something special is the sporadic and weird instrumentation that lurches and grinds through songs like “88,” “Cloud 69” and “Tell Me What You Want Me To Do,” among many others.
The better part of the album is peppy (working well with the cheerleader look Lowell has adopted for this album’s promotion), and while there are slower and more contemplative songs scattered throughout, even these have trendy attitudes that fit the youthful and lighthearted feel found in the other tracks.
Lowell’s debut album is worth a spin to cheer up any dull day. It might get stuck in your head, but it probably won’t stick around for long.
