Le1f, the artist moniker of Khalif Diouf, is one of the most hyped rappers in the underground hip-hop scene. His debut record Riot Boi, to be released by XL Recordings this fall, features some of the hottest electronic producers —SOPHIE, Evian Christ, Dubbel Dutch— while tackling issues such as black racial justice, transgender rights, and access to clean water. It follows a string of renowned mixtapes that saw him emerge as a leading figure in the queer rap scene. Khalif Diouf is both gay and a rapper, but don't call him a "gay rapper." He skirts the limitations of that label, frequently drawing attention to the complexity of his identity ("ask a gay question / here's a black answer"). Expect Riot Boi to be disruptive; all signs indicate that it will be the defining statement of this thrillingly unique artist.
