Music videos keep being an important part of music culture. Not just as a promotional tool, but as an artistic medium to express both the director and the artist vision. Take the massive impact that Drake’s Hotline Bling video made this year – Now it’s next to impossible to think of the song without picturing Drake dancing, which is both good and bad. But underneath the layer of commercial, high-budget Ariana-Grande-And-A-Million-Samsung-Phones videos, are huge amounts of hidden gems. Below are a few select highlights from this year. Feel free to add your suggestions in the comment section.
Ariel Pink – “Dayzed Inn Daydreams”. Directed by Grant Singer.
This aging punk rocker evokes something in me. There’s just something about this video.
Rag N Bone Man Feat. Vince Staples – “Hell Yeah”. Directed by Truman & Cooper.
A brutal tale about family ties.
Fono – “Real Joy”. Directed by Simon Cahn.
NTSFW! As the lyrics imply, love isn’t always clear cut.
Rone feat. Toshinori Kondo – “Acid Reflux”. Directed by Ilan Cohen in collaboration with Boris Levy.
Might be one of my absolute favorites this year. The visually trippy twist at the 2 minute mark syncs beautifully with the Rone track.
Nothing But Thieves – “Itch”. Directed by Roger Guàrdia.
Worth it because of the choreographed dance at the end alone.
Naughty Boy Ft. Beyoncé, Arrow Benjamin – “Runnin ‘(lose It All)”. Directed by Charlie Robins & Julie Gautier.
FKA Twigs - “Glass & Patron”.
Flume – Some Minds
Gwilym Gold – A Greener World
Le Peuple De L’Herbe – Yini Bo
The Chemical Brothers – Sometimes I Feel So Deserted
yvein monq – TWUN
Flying Lotus – Coronus, The Terminator
CHVRCHES – Empty Threat
