Update: “Richard” is the winner as his submission pointed out something which almost got forgotten after the Weinstein effect. Revelatory, naked and truthful hip hop albums – Everything from coming out as gay (right?) to being raw and intimate, or as Richard puts it “emotional super ultra album”.
Congratulations Richard, and thanks to everyone who contributed. I recommend you to scroll through the three pages below. There are some real gems, and all of them feel very genuine and hopeful in a year which has been rough overall.
“All the gay rap this year was my moment. This was the year of homoerotic rap music. Nobody tell me different (just f*cking Saturation era, bitch an tylers f*cking sc*m f*ck emotion f*cker boy)
But in general the fact that so many rappers dropped their most mellow sounding but on the other side most intimate and emotional super ultra album. All the time this year. All this magical gay sounding hip hop music this year made my year. For sure”
Personally I had a lot of fun when we both leaked Gorillaz and Taylor Swift’s track lists which resulted in bizarre PR for the site and Swift fans going absolute mad. Or the surreal moment seeing your own music getting leak reported. Or the hilarious, seemingly eternal feud between Liam and Noel. Maybe even discovering I kind of like Kesha’s music.
There’s been a lot of horrible moments of loss and revelations this year. Let’s end this year with something positive. What’s your favorite moment in music this year? An album release, a surprise, a reveal or maybe even a WTF moment as a gif.
Name you favorite moment below. One of you will win an album of your choice, vinyl or digital copy. You need to be signed in in order for me to contact the winner. Contest ends on December 15th!
Good luck!
Definitely my personal favorite moment in music was getting to see a live “leak” of Humanz before release. The crowd and the friends that were made at that show really showed that music is still alive and people can still be good in such a cruel world.
My favorite moment was joyner lucas I’m not racist… talking from two different sides about really sensitive subjects but both sides were hearing eachother out and at the end showed both of them hugging showing that we don’t really see eye to eye but they respected each other
Seeing LCD Soundsystem live.
Anthony Fantano giving DAMN a 7
Anthony Fantano giving Lil Pump a 7.
My favorite moment was when Dave Bayley broke his ankle at a concert and then finished the tour wearing a medical boot and still just danced around like nothing was wrong the whole time
My favourite moment in music this year is definitely the whole promo for Eminem’s Revival! Still super excited about the release date 15th of December. Good luck everyone. :)
The Gorillaz finally dropping Humanz and the subsequent tour. Seeing them live has been a long dream and I’m amped that I got to fulfill it today.

The release of Heaven Upside Down by Marilyn Manson. I remember getting so hyped about it last November when he dropped a teaser featuring Say10, the album was supposed to be released on Valentine’s Day but got delayed. Then he released it on October a week after getting crushed by a stage prop and 3 great music videos so far.
my favorite moment is the saturation trilogy. brockhampton is killing it.
Most surprising for me was discovering that Prince’s music vault wasn’t properly kept, leaving quite a bit of his works unsalvagable.
Frank Ocean officially releasing his visual album Endless on all formats… including VHS.
Not a moment-moment, but I loved how both Mac DeMarco and Tyler, the Creator, both like, “idgaf lol” idols for teens/early 20seses suddenly grew up and dropped superpersonal albums which also turned out to be their best.
Could say Jay-Z grew up a bit as well. “Moment” summarized; ‘Artists dropping surprisingly personal and great records’.
Huge Gorillaz-fan as well, so paying attention to every single thing leading up to Humanz was extremely fun as well until the album dropped and was bad.
Roger Waters coming to Newport Folk Festival to play ONE song with John Prine
When Brand New finally released a new album after being next to silent about new material for many years. They delayed the album for a long time and when it was finally announced it felt like it came out of nowhere. And even though there has been recent news about the lead member it cannot change how the band has meant to me.
By far, the most memorable moment for me this year, was the Yngwie Mamlsteen concert in Greensboro. Being a veteran, this show fell on the perfect date, Veterans Day. I got to meet Yngwie after seeing him 4 times before the show in Japan. I was told going back that he wouldn’t do more than a handshake and he wouldn’t sign a body part at all. I got back there, he asked me if I had seen him in concert before, I explained yes, and then told him that if it hadn’t been for his music I would not have made it through Desert Storm. He hugged me and thanked me for my service, signed my arm along with 3 CD’s, a DVD, and gave me a copy of his newest album and signed it too. During the concert he spotted me and pointed and broke out into an impromptu rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. I was thoroughly impressed.
Thundercat opening up for Flying Lotus, who had 3-D visuals, at the Hollywood Forever Cemetary. Oh, and Hannibal Buress doing comedy in between them. With video punchlines. One of them is him having sex with a Keurig. Amazing.
Speculation around a second Kendrick Lamar album spawned my favorite music moment of the year. That whole weekend, the internet was buzzing about a companion piece that would tell a separate side of the story (the ‘blue pill’). At first, I was a little disappointed with the record, and was hoping that this blue album would fill out some of what seemed like incomplete themes. To ‘answer’ the questions that DAMN. left open with another album would have ruined what I came to see as its true vision. When the noise died down, I finally realized that DAMN. was so good, and so rich, that the conversations it bore and my thought life surrounding it were enough of a companion to the masterfully thoughtful, relevant, and honest works that comprised it. My own walk through this process made this my favorite moment (and favorite album) of 2017.
Favorite music of 2017 — all of the score and soundtrack to the new Twin Peaks!!
My favorite moment: Mount Eerie melodically reprising The Microphones’ The Moon in Soria Moria off this year’s A Crow Looked At Me. The circumstances behind that album were and are absolutely horrific, but Phil’s healing process led to the creation of some truly unforgettable music.
SZA’S Album
That new I, The Mighty record (Where the mind wants to go/Where you let it go) was amazing. A bit of a stylistic change but those two “title tracks” were amazing. I loved the rapid pace of “Where The Mind Wants to Go” and the the use of guitars. The lyrics dealing with fantasies of death and struggling to figure out where you stand in a relationship somehow manage to not end up stale or cliche. The closing track and the impact of the line “I will love you even if we’re just energy” feels so big and amazing. Love the the flow of “Sleepwalker” too. And of course the vocals on that second verse made my heart feel like it would burst. And Tilian from DGD’s vocals on “Silver Tongues” were insane. Amazing record.
The War On Drugs – A Deeper Understanding
My favorite moment was King Gizzard releasing Polygondwanaland for free and then I bought 3 different fan-made vinyl of it.
King Gizzard & The Lizard releasing 5 albums this year. One of them being randomly released and another being completely free and people were encouraged to make their own vinyl of the album.
That sure was something !
