Update: “Richard” is the winner as his submission pointed out something which almost got forgotten after the Weinstein effect. Revelatory, naked and truthful hip hop albums – Everything from coming out as gay (right?) to being raw and intimate, or as Richard puts it “emotional super ultra album”.
Congratulations Richard, and thanks to everyone who contributed. I recommend you to scroll through the three pages below. There are some real gems, and all of them feel very genuine and hopeful in a year which has been rough overall.
“All the gay rap this year was my moment. This was the year of homoerotic rap music. Nobody tell me different (just f*cking Saturation era, bitch an tylers f*cking sc*m f*ck emotion f*cker boy)
But in general the fact that so many rappers dropped their most mellow sounding but on the other side most intimate and emotional super ultra album. All the time this year. All this magical gay sounding hip hop music this year made my year. For sure”
Personally I had a lot of fun when we both leaked Gorillaz and Taylor Swift’s track lists which resulted in bizarre PR for the site and Swift fans going absolute mad. Or the surreal moment seeing your own music getting leak reported. Or the hilarious, seemingly eternal feud between Liam and Noel. Maybe even discovering I kind of like Kesha’s music.
There’s been a lot of horrible moments of loss and revelations this year. Let’s end this year with something positive. What’s your favorite moment in music this year? An album release, a surprise, a reveal or maybe even a WTF moment as a gif.
Name you favorite moment below. One of you will win an album of your choice, vinyl or digital copy. You need to be signed in in order for me to contact the winner. Contest ends on December 15th!
I had a lot of favorite moments in music this year, from seeing my beloved Radiohead live in Denmark, to another favorite, Gåte, releasing their New EP after twelve silent years. And the amazing Twin Peaks revival with beautiful soundtrack and three great vinyls!
But I’d like to tell you about an amazing live performance by Liars in my hometown Bergen, Norway in August. In a location fit for about 50 people, Angus came into the room wearing a lovely wedding gown, and for the next 50 minutes or so played all of my favorite songs from Drums Not Dead and Sisterworld, including some old tunes and some new. The new album TFCF is also one of the best releases this year! What a year in music, I loved it!
Princess Nokia throwing soup at a racist was golden
when I saw Kronos Quartet live in Korea.
Watching all of the hysteria unfold over DAMN. and the conspiracy theories about how it was a double album – they got pretty creative and tbh I was a little disappointed when it didn’t happen.
Once my “very limited” brand new – science fiction vinyl gets here it will be that moment right then. The chaos over ordering and the speculation over the xx/500 cd’s that got sent out was fun to watch.
Favorite of 2017 was Mac DeMarco’s “This Old Dog” coming out!! That album so perfect and one of his best!!
There is no serious question that “Similitude of a Dream” by the Neal Morse Band was the best album of the year by far. Nothing else even comes close. But “Psychotic Symphony” by Sons of Apollo came the closest, probably because it also has Mike Portnoy on the drums.
The LONG and DAUNTING wait for Witness by Katy Perry to leak
For sure all the extreme things that came out with Damn, the album is lit but also the videos and all the graphical elements are just a perfect match to the music, the words and overall the mood. It’s such a creative and hard core piece of art!
I listened to Cudi’s, “Passion, Pain, & Demon Slayin’” while I was coincidentally spending time in treatment in SoCal the same time he was. “PPDS” helped me spiritually & mentally. It made me very emotional but in a great/healing type of way! It just made me feel at home, and I felt at eaze all while sorting out some very personal issues, and problems. I could zone out anytime to that album, and would find a lot of inner peace while listening, even though there was some dark parts of the album. I’m always ready to jam out to any cudi album, but this album hit me different. I could connect to it on so many different levels. It was a fantastic and much needed addition to his line of music projects. So yes… this album was my all-favorite moment of 2017 💟🙌❣️😇
I guess Clavin Harris releasing a lovely feel good video that features live animals and not much more. Such a change from all the club scenes, silly dance moves, outrageous twerking contests and keeping it real with the hommies in the streets… #parrotsaretherealdeal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r033bxSd_eI
No huge pop icon died this year (Appart from Johnny Halliday, the French Elvis Presley). However it’s over for Deaths of Tom Petty, Chester Bennington, Al Jarreau, Allan Holdsworth, Chuck Berry, J. Geils, John Wetton, Larry Coryell, Svend Asmussen, Chris Cornell, Gregg Allman, Butch Trucks, Rosalie Sorrels, Prodigy, Glen Campbell, Walter Becker, Grant Hart, Walter “Junie” Morrison, Jaki Liebezeit, Holger Czukay and Pierre Henry.

Brand New’s Science Fiction is probably my favourite album of 2017, but let’s be honest – I just returned from a quick vacation where I travelled 1100 miles to finally cross a Thrice concert off the bucket list. This was MY favourite moment in music this year. Seeing Anthony Green also sing on stage with Balance & Composure was a highlight of the show, but Thrice really stole the show and stole my heart – again.
Discovering that I love stoner/doom metal and finding the album “Reflections of a Floating World” by Elder. Album of year!
I had a chance to watch the old school funk group Heatwave perform. Even though the leader Keith Wilder was in a wheel chair they still put on an amazing show and then a few months later he passed. I felt fortunate to see him in his element before he transitioned.
I watched the XX headline at Lollapalooza in the summer…they were thanking the crowd and commenting on how 9 years earlier they played the small shitty stage in the trees at a brutal time in the afternoonand (a show that I also saw) and they had come all of this way since then. Both Romy and Oliver broke into tears when the crowd went nuts and wouldn’t stop cheering. It was such a special moment of gratitude and humility from the band, and as an xx fan and a music fan it was amazing to see.
