Canada's Tegan and Sara have announced a release date of January 29 2013, for their album Heartthrob.

People say they change their sound with each cd, but they literally changed their entire genre based on what I've heard. If I wanted to listen to stuff like that I'd throw on Kelly Clarkson or any generic radio pop song. Gaining new fans of this genre will also alienate old fans.

Watch first single Closer below.

Actually loving their new sound. A fan of their old one… but this new sound really is more catchy.

I’ve been a fan of Tegan and Sara for about 12 years, and I still love their music. It’s different, but still fantastic. I never feel like I’m going to be bored with what I hear.

“this will not alienate anyone.” then I guess I’m not anyone, because this is the first album of theirs in many years that I will not be listening to. I could accept the mainstream pop sound if the lyrics were still quality, but they are not. Sadly, I think Tegan and Sara are in the past for me now. Good luck to the rest of you who mean to follow them in this direction.

I don’t think they have ever been really a ‘hardcore’ band, this seems to be a natural progression into this sound for them. Not listening? then how do you even know if it’s good or not. I always give new stuff a few spins and let the jury be out for a bit.

I’m so disappointed 11 years of good music and everything started going downhill. The reasons I liked them before was their feeling, their passion, their quality.

Whatever you say, I can’t seem to find an inch of that anywhere in their album.

Change is good but they seem be experiencing burn out and their sound has taken a serious nose dive.

I even feel a little angry when they said they didn’t mind losing fans in order to gain a little more fame and money.

Those guys lost one thing from me, respect.
They don’t even have any for their music or fans.

You find no feeling, passion or quality in their new music? Maybe you aren’t listening to the same songs I am. Similar to what Vegemite says below, I don’t think Sara has ever been more powerful, passionate and vulnerable than when she performs All Messed Up.

It also is very bold to say that they don’t care about their fans. I have not come across another band that cares more than they do. They are just being realistic about losing fans, it happens to every band. In true Tegan and Sara style, they go into far more depth than most bands when asked about it.

I have tremendous respect for them. They’ve come a long way and this album is still very T&S. It may include instruments you are not accustomed to and a higher production value than previous albums, but it is far from a “nose dive.”

exactly! people are nuts on here or in total denial to think that there current songs are worthy of anything but forgetting after a few listen’s…and you are so right its so disrespectful to dispose of fans that have been loyal to your music since you started…T and S are such pretentious jerks!

not even sure if youre trolling or not, cause this is the stupidest thing anyone can say. What you’re implying is that a total change of sound = alienating fans? Since when did artists have to conform to fans? “Oh the fans would like this, lets make the song this way.” If artistic expression was always like this, then what is the point of music? They felt like changing their sound, so they did. Take it or leave it, they’ll still have fans without you.

Tell me there’s no passion when you hear Sara sing “Go, go, go if you want to. I can’t stop you.”. Most heartwrenching lyric I have ever heard anyone sing. And I think these sisters have huge respect for their fans. No, I don’t think, I know.

Anyhow. I’m a huge fan, and I love every single album. The Con might be my favorite, because it’s just a masterpiece. But I love previous albums, I love albums after that one. The songs I’ve heard so far do not disappoint me. Change is not a bad thing.

I can’t see why people lose touch with Tegan and Sara. They have changed with every album they released. The Con was the very first to contain electronic parts and people didn’t bitch about it, but loved it. Sainthood was a mix of the extreme. Tegan’s Songs went more punk and were really fast and simple in its structure. Sara’s become more and more electronic and twisted. Songs such like “Shock To Your System” is a logical follower of Alligator or Paperback Head. They did experiment with electro music for more than 5 years, now they have decided to change their style once more and focuse on that electronic influence. I personally am not surprised. I’ve loved all their albums so far, but every risk an artist takes has pros and cons.
You may like or even love and I am sure you may also dislike their new music, BUT to say that they have lost profession and perfection is an insult. Shock To Your System has got briliant lyrics. AMAZINGLY arranged instrumentations and certainly a special touch of melancholia. The guitar parts played in the background remind one of John Frusciante and the drums are anything but ordinary. The piano blends perfectly with the synths. What is there to complain about? I really can’t see it.
And it is an offence to say you won’t listen to their new album.
    a) because we’ve only got half of it and b) being a fan for more than 10 years and boycotting them even before the new album is fully released shows a lousy fanship to me. Tegan and Sara never made plain music. Ever since they released The Con they did not go back to their roots but went forward.
It takes more than 5 listens to get them fully.

Shoot, I can’t find it!! I don’t use Tumblr so no idea how to go about hunting for it on there. I’m so excited for this album, and Biffy Clyro’s new one. At least, if I don’t get to hear the leaked version, I think I can last 7 more days!!
