Break ups & bummers. Right? We've all been there.
In the words of DEAD GHOSTS: “most of the songs on "Can't Get No" are about break ups or bummers”. But, the band is quick to point out “the album is NOT a bummer.” Comprised of Bryan Nicol (guitar, vocals), Drew Wilkinson (guitar), Mike Wilkinson (drums) and Maurizio Chiumento (bass), Vancouver's Dead Ghosts directed their efforts toward self-sufficiency this time around. Opting not to record in a traditional studio, Dead Ghosts deposited their band fund into a Tascam 388 8-track purchased on Craigslist and lugged it around every corner of their hometown, setting up in bars, kitchens, and the basements of friends. The change in scenery and the vagrant recording style lends a sense of transience to the new material. As personal lives become heavy, maturity begins to creep in, too. But don't worry; the songs of "Can't Get No" still destroy!
In the new single "Roky Said" the band looked to one of their musical heroes for inspiration: Roky Erickson. “I definitely liked the idea of writing about Roky and incorporating his lyrics,” says guitarist/vocalist Bryan Nicol. “His music is a huge influence on us, and his story is a really tragic one.” That said, he admits that the song is more directly about “being left behind.” You'll notice the familiar jangly-surfer overtone that echoes '60s Nuggets-era psychedelic rock, but Nicol notes that there's some modern elements embedded within as well. “Most of our songs tend to sound like some fucked-up interpretation of a '60s pop song,” he says. “We take old elements of rock n' roll, add our flavor to it, and try to create something different. I like to think that most of the songs a have a stand alone quality to them.”
