Phil Jones may have played keyboards in Washed Out's touring outfit, but the Atlanta-based artist better known as Dog Bite has also been working on his own. With a deep, buzzing voice akin to Beck's world-weary, doomsday groan on Modern Guilt, he lords over a darkly swirling soundscape that owes as much to gnarled guitarplay as it does to hazed-out synthwork. Equal parts nasty shoegaze and 4AD moodiness, a song like "Prettiest Pills" does plenty to illustrate what this guy does best. While Dinowalrus' approach to rocktronic psychedelia is a happy one, Dog Bite's is angry and unapologetically so. "Prettiest Pills" is the first single from Jones' upcoming full-length debut, Velvet Changes, due February 5 on Carpark. Visit Dog Bite's Tumblr to hear more of his Jones' work, plus collaborations like Acid Flashback and Veux. Dog Bite hits the road with Toro Y Moi in January.
