Magna Carta Holy Grail is the upcoming twelfth studio album by American rapper Jay-Z. The album is scheduled for release on July 4, 2013 by Roc-A-Fella and Roc Nation while being distributed by Universal.
During the fifth game of the 2013 NBA Finals, Jay-Z was featured in a new commercial by Samsung where he announced that his twelfth studio album would be titled, Magna Carta Holy Grail and would be released on July 4, 2013. He was seen speaking to producer Rick Rubin in the studio about the album saying, "The album is about, like this duality of how do you navigate through this whole thing, through success, through failures, through all this and remain yourself." The album will be available for free download on July 4, 12:01 a.m. EST, to the first one million Samsung Galaxy S III, Samsung Galaxy S4 and Samsung Galaxy Note II users.

no, he’s not pioneering anything. it’s the same as a chain, such as Best Buy, purchasing 500,000 copies of an album. wholesale has never counted as sold units, nor should it be done now.
The Samsung albums are purchased and gone. Best Buy might never sell those 500,000 to the customer and has the right to return any and all copies they take out, it’s called Return Reserve. A CD or record is not considered sold
once it’s shipped from the distributor to the retailer. Retailers have the right to return any and all unsold copies back to the distributor without paying for them.
Samsung and Jay-Z don’t have that type of deal, this was a sale without refund. Samsung owns all records and cannot return, 1 million albums sold.
If Best Buy purchased x amount of CD’s and then gave them away, they would not be factored into the SoundScan. Samsung is operating in the same manner, purchasing x amount and using as a promotional tool. There is no retail product exchanged. They were bought at near whole sale rates. There is no retail item for the general consumer to purchase in this case.
I get what you’re saying, but that’s never happened before in music. Samsung purchased the rights to 1 million copies, unlike Best Buy who merely holds the physical CDs and passes the sale onto the consumer. Best Buy doesn’t buy anything until a customer buys a CD. Samsung bought the albums, they’re sold. Like I said, it hasn’t happened before in the industry, this is Jay-z pioneering something.
If Bestbuy buys x amount of cd’s from a distributor its always a policy of if they can sell. The distributor has to get all inventory if it dosent sell. It is basically a situation of “Ill front you x amount of cds and if you can sell them. If not I buy them back. The Samsung deal def means he goes platinum before he drops. It dosent matter if it is promotional or not, he sold those units already.
Know the game. This is def pioneering the “wild wild west” of the internet and one of the most brilliant things in this day in age of music.

the only “leak” we’ll get it when the Samsung users get it tomorrow at midnight(?) or whenever they get it on July 4. Which sadly isn’t much of a leak at all. I’m just glad that Jay announced it pretty recently. Makes it feel like we haven’t been waiting THAT long.

im not a new hip hop kid and remember the old jay-z. what are you talking about? vol.1 was dope..first album with r.kelly was good. blueprint 2 had some missteps (a solid 14 tracks still minus the filler tracks), blueprint 3 was dope. and i kinda agree on kingdom come (minus 3 or 4 songs)
