From Stereogum: The Brooklyn-based trio Bear In Heaven has long specialized in a sort of expansive, overwhelming, warmly psychedelic synth-rock, in music for closing your eyes and feeling the scope of the universe while maybe also dancing. And they’ve just announced that later this summer, they’ll follow up their fine 2012 album I Love You, It’s Cool with a new one called Time Is Over One Day Old. In a press release, frontman Jon Philpot says that the album is about “a lot of shedding, getting rid of layers and preconceptions… breaking up with old ways of thinking, old ways of being, starting to look at this thing in a new way and finding something positive… That’s about all we can do; make people feel something.” First single “Time Between” is a big, surging piece of prettiness. The band will spend much of the year’s second half touring across North America and Europe. Below, listen to “Time Between” and check out the album’s tracklist and the band’s touring schedule.

My review (in FFWD weekly): Time Is Over One Day Old is sprawling and dreamy synth-pop, showing off layers of creative sound making without being esoteric. The music easily pleases the ears on first listen, but thick veins of rich sonic texture run underneath the surface, making it an indelible record that you’ll want to listen to again and again.
Bear In Heaven use synths to create many fresh styles, overlaid with smooth vocals by bandleader Jon Philpot. Songs like “They Dream” melt down into slow, shimmering jams. Other songs are catchy, krautrock-influenced explorations of sounds, like “If I Were To Lie” and “Time Between.” Many of the tracks offer a satisfying and driving rhythm, good for making time fly by. The music is dreamy, beautiful and memorable right to the last note of the last song on the album. There’s so much to explore in the all-too-brief 43 minutes of the album.
With the band signing to Dead Oceans, and ever-growing recognition from the media, maybe Bear In Heaven will have more for us soon. But for now, Time Is Over One Day Old will fulfill the musical cravings over and over again.
