Promotional copies of the album have been sent out to a select number of publications. NME is one of them, which published their initial reaction to the album. They aren't actually allowed to publish a full review, due to an embargo from the label.
A few quotes from the preview include;
"It's so punchy you'll find yourself with your first involuntarily in the air midway through"
On the track Down Side By Me, the writer says "Mayberry's voice is joined by a slightly robotic auto-tuned chorus, as if Daft Punk are singing backing vocals through a shower curtain."
Bury It is "A soaring banger with an insistent chorus, this is a crystallisation of everything that makes Chvrches special."
And the final track is "a stately, contemplative closer that tilts at Sigur Ros' dreaminess and showcases Mayberry's voice at its very best"
This album cover made me want to search for my Power, Corruption, and Lies vinyl. The first single is not bad but it doesn’t have me that excited either. I’m digging Make Them Gold (live) a little bit more though.
Great sound
Already preordered the vinyl!
I haven’t been this excited for a new album since Mother Mother released VGBT last year!
Can’t wait to hear the studio version of Clearest Blue!
Wow – Clearest Blue is my favorite track so far. This album is sounding better and better.
Hyped. Really hyped.
Can’t wait!!!!!! Hope they come to Argentina soon :)
Super excited for this. Does anyone know what will be on the pre-order postcard?
this album will be amazing!
they really have the promos for this record and Caracal under control eh? still no leak surprisingly
i’m glad they haven’t leaked! it just means next Friday is going to be HUGE!
6 days and still nothing! It doesn’t happen these days, I hope it will be out there tomorrow
None of these songs even remotely live up to “The Mother We Share.” “Clearest Blue” especially, builds up to something and then completely lets the listener down with a really unoriginal synth sequence as the climax. Sorry, but from what they’ve delivered so far, this album is going to be a total dunce. Chvrches remains a rather ineffectual one hit wonder in my opinion.
‘Make them gold’ sounds like the next single that can live up to expectations. Although I hardly disagree about the 1 hit wonder part, first album is full of great songs
I don’t agree. I enjoy the news songs, especially ”Clearest Blue”. The climax doesn’t seem disappointing to me at all.
streaming now on NPR http://www.npr.org/2015/09/20/439491238/first-listen-chvrches-every-open-eye
Not high enough to submit but It’s streaming now on NPR
Listening to it right now, really gooood
good album. but can someone tell me why they always insist on having a song or two where one of the guys sings and lauren doesnt? I mean, yeah they’re part of the band, too, but I don’t think it should come as a surprise to anyone that the main reason anyone listens to CHVRCHES is for her voice…
I really enjoy the male dynamic in the album. The songs groove is a bit more chill and I fell the male voice is fitting for the track.
I mean look at “Under The Tide”
Weirdly, it turned out to be my favorite song on the album. I like Ian’s (Ian’s, right?) vocals. Lauren’s beautiful timbre can be quite overwhelming at times.
album is lifeless, so damn boring.
A bit harsh, but after two listens I’m disappointed that the band haven’t evolved their sound, it doesn’t take any unexpected changes or dare to take any risks. I know the band said they “aimed to stick with that works”, and improve upon it – But I was hoping for something new. And the singles aren’t as strong as the first album either. It’s not a bad album, it’s more cohesive than their first, but I hope the band dares to experiment on their next project. And that goes for the lyrics as well.
I’m not super crazy about some of the singles released, but the album keeps the core of what music they make, and is totally different from most of what they’ve done. The synth work and production is so much fuller and has much more energy.
Agreed!
The new album is a bit more electro-pop, but it’s done really well. It’s simple. The lyrics are everything. Its almost as though if you are in a happy mood, you can dance and have a good time, but if you’re sad. You can just listen and still have it fit your emotions. That’s why I love CHVRCHES. This album is really dance and synth fueled and I am feeling it. Just shuffling it with the older album makes the whole artistry blend well. Really enjoying the album.
C’mon alreadyyyyyyyy
So good!!! Keep You On My Side is on repeat, best song so far XD
i’m disappointed, they sound more generic than ever!
the mixing was horrible, my poor ears.
