“Dead Empires sound like what Cloudkicker could’ve been in an alternate universe in which Ben Sharp was influenced by doomy, stoney High on Fire riffs instead of atmospheric post rock and Meshuggah… with a few extra bong rips thrown in for good measure. The Hudson Valley, NY instrumental three-piece brings it hard.” -Metalsucks.net
“Based in the Hudson Valley, which is in all reality our back yard (and front yard), it seems strange to only now have our eyes opened and ears blasted by a three piece instrumental band that both embraces and denounces genre tagging. With a range of styles, and a wealth of intelligent intensity, Waiting In Waves was ahead of its time.” -Sorrow Eternal Music Blog
“Dead Empires are an instrumental 3 piece that uses just the right Shred To Jam ratio. Whenever someone asks me about this band I usually say “It’s sort of like Russian Circles, with more balls”. I recommend you see them live to get the full effect, and to see their massive balls.” -MetalInjection.com
While the band is instrumental, they choose not to label themselves as such- the music is organic, natural, passionate- combining a wide range of influences to produce a sound that sways from epic, ethereal soundscapes to post-rock riffs, rounded out with good old fashioned sludgy heaviness. After experimenting with several lineup changes over the past five years (including a dual-drummer period) the band has found it’s sonic sweet spot as a three-piece. But the genre-bending intensity of the bands’ live shows that has earned them the most acclaim.
“Secret Snakes/Silent Serpent”, the band’s newest effort, is slated for a 2/3/15 release. The 6-song album was recorded in the summer of 2014 at The Isokon Studios in Woodstock NY once again by D. James Goodwin (Devo, Murder by Death, Thursday, Kaki King, Norah Jones), thanks in part to the grand prize from winning the 2013 Hudson Valley Battle of the Bands at BSP Kingston. The album features art by Revolution Dream Design and a contribution by Nick Lee of Moon Tooth.
