Family of the Year found great success in Loma Vista, its sophomore album released in July 2012. Not only did its single “Hero” appear in the Oscar-nominated film Boyhood, but it climbed the charts here in the US and overseas in countries like Belgium, Switzerland, and Germany.
Next month, the Los Angeles-based indie folk outfit — comprised of Joe Keefe, Sebastian Keefe, James Buckey, and Christina Schroeter — hopes to earn similar acclaim with its follow-up record, a self-titled LP of 10 new tracks. Due to hit shelves on September 4th via Nettwerk, it was recorded in Berlin and the band’s hometown and incorporates more electronic textures than fans might be used to.
While their approach may differ slightly this time around, the Family members still hold fast to the basics, to what initially propelled them into the spotlight: the touch of an honest pop songwriter. They proved this on the forthcoming album’s lead single “Make You Mine“; they do so again here on “Give a Little”. Over gently picked guitars, the band offers lines that are both sweet and sad, wishful and pragmatic, yet always said with a serene grace. “Gotta speak a little louder, gotta be a little prouder,” they encourage, “‘Cause you know that someday your bones will be in the ground.” I don’t know that a Girlhood movie is in the works, but this track would pair up rather nicely with a moving, coming-of-age story.
