Insectile Death Metal inspired by a grand, arching science fiction mythos and the oppressive atmosphere of cosmic horror, BOREWORM paints an aggressive yet hauntingly melodic musical soundscape.

Michigan’s Boreworm certainly have a fitting name, as their take on modern progressive death metal certainly bores itself into your cranium. They carry a sound similar to one of the new kings of prog death, Black Crown Initiate (which is OK in my book), but Boreworm do enough not only to separate themselves, but to also signal that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. The band’s sound is decidedly atmospheric and proggy, but it’s also very chuggy, sort of like if a tech-death band got mixed with a melodeath band, a post-death band, and a first-generation deathcore group. I’m often reminded of 7 Horns 7 Eyes in how Boreworm weave monolithic chugs in with ambiance and welcome bursts of aggression and melody. Siren-like leads and solos are a big part of what makes these four songs tick, and despite the atonality of the riffs, the harsh nature of the vocals, and the chilling atmopshere, Boreworm are masters at injecting creeping melodies into the madness.

They cite cosmic horror as a big part of what they do, and it’s clear they want to incite fear with their music. The latent Ulcerate influence helps add to that effect. Unfortunately, this interesting sonic stew isn’t quite fully blended, so some moments don’t gel as well as they could, but the ideas are all there for something special in the future. As it stands, Boreworm are incredibly talented and craft top-notch modern progressive death metal.
