Austin experimental psych rockers BOYFRNDZ are back and ready to release their third full-length effort, Impulse, later this spring. The lead single is the ethereal “Hiatus.” After the opening lulls you into a trance with dreamy, quivering guitars, intricate, rolling drum work comes in heavy with Scott Martin’s tender high-pitched vocals to balance. The stuttering, military feel of the drums breaks up the lingering guitar for a discordant feeling of floating rhythms. The quartet plays off of that tension until the last 45 seconds, when everything explodes into an intoxicating, consuming energy. That cathartic crescendo mirrors the sentiments of being consumed by emotions in a relationship as Martin so delicately sings “Based solely on what feels good/ I’m rearranging what else could/ It’s so endearing fearing her/ I’m caught, elated, without words.” Check it out.
Few bands outside metal seem willing to reach for the widest screen and pull the edges back into view. Boyfrndz achieves that epic feel effortlessly on 2014 LP Breeder. Unashamed to be tagged progressive, singer/guitarist Scott Martin, bassist Joseph Raines, drummer Aaron Perez, and guitarist Jason Erwin shatter windows with an eruption of melody, power, and emotion – honed by enough craft to keep the colors from running.
Boyfrndz was just an idea between Scott Martin, Aaron Perez, & Joseph Raines in 2011.. Since then, the group has released two Eps, two full length records, an electronic album, and a live improv album featuring Grammy Award winning keyboardist Ikey Owens (a frequent collaborator, producing and playing on two other albums as well as a live player). Boyfrndz has toured with PALMS (Chino Moreno of Deftones/Members of ISIS), El Ten Eleven, & Caddywhompus, also doing multiple regional dates with Tera Melos, TTNG, & Marnie Stern.. among their 7 other national headlining tours in their 4 quick years. Boyfrndz recently signed with Brutal Panda Records to release the full length album "Breeder", which sees the group further expanding their meticulously constructed hypnotic sound into new realms of colorful, energetic and emotional territories. Impossible to pin a label to, Boyfrndz seamlessly merge hook-laden, reverb soaked vocals with swirling guitar melodies and complex rhythms. Don't expect to see these boys slowing down any time soon.
