There’s so much room for creativity in death metal, and Oklahoma-based Dischordia are definitely trying their damnedest to live up to that. Featuring discordant (heh) melodies and ruinous grooves, they’ve created something unique and worth listening to, especially for fans of something like Gorguts or Artificial Brain.

Featuring guest vocals from Black Crown Initiate near the end, “The Ruin” comes from the band’s sophomore effort Thanatopsis. The band cite greats like Decapitated, Meshuggah and The Dillinger Escape Plan as influences, but the weirder tech death masters I mentioned in the opening are a better fit here. Combining the eerie, disturbing characteristics of those artists with a more modern sense of groove, they’ve managed to create their own brand of unsettling tech. The clean break near the beginning is unexpected as well. If you like what you hear here, Thanatopsis comes out on Rogue Records on the 25th of November.
