Freak folk mesmerizer Marissa Nadler has today announced a new studio album. Entitled Strangers, the her seventh full-length to date is coming May 20th via Sacred Bones.
Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Earth, Black Mountain) returns as producer for an album that steps outside the bounds of more autobiographical efforts like 2014’s July. Instead, Nadler has created a cast of “primal, fractured, disillusioned, delicate, and alone” characters, the eponymous “strangers” of the title, occupying a “surreal, apocalyptic dreamscape.”
As a first listen to this desolate, gothic folk, Nadler has shared the LP’s lead single, “Janie in Love”. Richly texturized by synths that melt and simmer, the song encapsulates the burning desire the comes with love not only unrequited, but dangerously impossible. “You’re a natural disaster/ And I am watching you blow up everything,” Nadler coos on the poetic bridge. “You touch and the earth will crumble/ You speak and hurricanes attack.”
