A green blimp with the number "2014" and the Aphex Twin logo appeared in London's skies this weekend. The Aphex Twin logo then appeared all over New York City. Go ahead and get full-on excited about that now, because Richard D. James has just announced SYRO, his first Aphex Twin LP since 2001's Drukqs. It was announced via Tor, the deep web browser typically used for the internet's shadier pursuits.

This morning, James tweeted a URL that only works with the Tor browser. The link revealed the above image, as well as what appears to be a tracklist. You can look at that below. We can confirm that all of this information: the image, the album title, and the tracklist, are all real and official.

There's also this site, accessible using a regular browser, containing everything but the title and tracklist: http://syro2eznzea2xbpi.com/

Earlier this year, the Caustic Window record from 1994 made the rounds via Kickstarter. Back in 2011, James premiered new music in Poland. His last string of live appearances were in 2011 and 2012, including a set at the 2011 Pitchfork Music Festival Paris.

Fake Leak Floating Around

Added

There's a fake leak being shared on various torrent and download sites. Several members have found out it's Lodsb’s “Lazer eyes love” album simply renamed to fit Aphex title tracks.

Similar to Daft Punk releases, Aphex Twin's album is bound to get a few fake album leaks along the way.

One Of The Fake Leaks Is Unidentifiable

Added

There are multiple fake SYRO album download leaks floating around and while most of them have been identifiable as other artists album being renamed, one has yet to be confirmed as fake.

Popular private music torrent site What.CD, which is known for its strict rules, has yet to mark the album as fake, and noted that "There is a strong chance that this 'leak' is not Aphex Twin. However, there is currently no conclusive proof either way".

This has sparked an interesting discussion, with some fans stating it just might be Aphex himself putting out a fake album. As one fan says; "anyone who has listened to rdj since the 90's is painfully aware this is fake". However, another fan had an interesting take on the situation:

"RDJ is a renowned troll. It's not beyond the realm of reason to think he might have leaked this as a joke. [And] As many have noted here, there are many releases that, when first leaked, people were certain were fake, but they turned out to be real (Daft Punk being perhaps the most recent example). Personally, I'm near certain this isn't the case, but it's not impossible that Aphex could have suddenly lost nearly all his creative excellence."

Album Details Announced

Added

The album cover, by Designers Republic has been announced along with the track times - Which doesn't match up with the previous unidentified leak.

The album will be out on September 23th via Warp and a press release, including a lengthy (and odd) biography has been shared. Below is a quote:

"Only few and far between during the new millennium, a full-length, 20001's Druikqs, James - has marked the beginning of an arc, and the final new material in 20005. A lot of the music in any way is often a lack of communication and leadership to be fallacious rumors of new material for his fannies and his enthusiasm has not diminished hope. However ambitious this year, 9014, they uncovered new mats in almost a decade distribution crowdfund rallied together his army of fans: A precious gift that can not be the same as the new

Phex Twinnipicks material is still unquenched thirst.

Syria, September 23, 2014, along with records of Aphex Twin's new album to be released. For the owner of Triple vinyl, CD and digital formats will be available. Bleep a very limited vinyl version you can register your interest in buying."

SYRO Track Debuted in 2007

Added

A snippet of SYRO debuted live 7 years ago, according to a member of What. The opening track is subtitled on the press release as "the manchester track", which is apparently the fan name for minipops 67 [source field mix]. A Youtube snippet has been added to this page.

There's also talk about Metz, a track which debuted in 2010, might be included on the album but with a different title.

Meanwhile, a Japanese bonus track has been revealed. In standard Aphex track naming fashion it's titled MARCHROMT30A edit 2b 96.

James Speaks!

Added

Fader has recently conducted an interview with James, discussing SYRO. Among the highlights, Mr Aphex revealed that the album is a mixture of old and new songs. Some of the songs date back "six or seven years ago" which sort of confirms that both the Manchester track (posted earlier) and Metz, which also has been played live, might be on it.

He also told Fader that he's buying an insane amount of music on a weekly basis, "I collect sounds from other records so I have to know where they come from and how they’re made. I bought every old sampler in existence and bought all the sample libraries. Like a serial killer, basically. I’ve gone through all of the sounds and worked out where everyone got all their sounds from."

And finally, he reveals that SYRO isn't a one-off, there's more to come.

"It's like, ‘Shit, I should have put the real one up there.’ I can't put it up yet, though, can I? How much do you get paid for a YouTube thing?"

Hey guys, I’ve removed the “the leak is fake” comments. The status have been reset.
Remember that we (as in Has it Leaked) don’t report leaks, but our members do. While we do have our point system, some fall threw the cracks and even the most knowledgable music nerd can make mistakes.

For future reference, there’s bound to be reports going around from now on about fake leaks. We’ll make sure to confirm the forthcoming leak, but before we do that – Scroll down to this comment section and you’re bound to get a confirmation from one of our trusted Aphex fans.

As the person who wrote the “fake album” comments, I’d like to explain that I wasn’t upset, I know this is a community where everybody builds it and that are the users, without permission of the site administrators, the ones who report a leaked album. Just was a little bit annoying seeing so much people believing that fake, nothing else.

The “report fake” button could be helpful for things like this, though this has been an unusual situation, probably made up by Richard (we all know his sense of humour), but as you do.

      Thanks for all your work!

I would like to see some proof that the leak out right now is Lodsb’s “Lazer.Eyes.Love”, because i’ve listened to that album and it sounds nthing like the leak. This is to anyone that is able to shed some light on why this is fake.

Im sorry, but you’re not a true AFX fan if you believe it could even conceivably be his music in that fake leak. LOL

The unidentified leak is very reminiscent of Aphex Twin. Employs a lot of his techniques (granular synthesis especially), and has a striking similarity as far as blending rhythm and melody, and harmony and melody. But if its him, then his production technique has changed. He used to have the subjects right out front, but contrasting with the subtle dazzling background objects. Now his subjects are more “flat”, and don’t demand as much attention, which leaves us with the impressive, but low-quantity objects. If it’s him, he’s very different from what he used to be. I should listen to it more, but this is definitely a simpler record as far as production technique is concerned.

Also, pay attention to the mood of the music and the “album art”. The music is very lighthearted like on the Richard D. James Album, and the “album art” (the face-thing with logo attached) suggests a very happy Richard. I like this new green logo too, it fits nicely with this more upbeat music.

Yeah, i’m declaring the unconfirmed leak legitimate. Its definitely him, so many similar techniques, there’s no way it can’t be. But he really has taken a step forward. Just listen to how the rhythms, harmonies and melodies blend together; He’s getting so much better at doing that. Great album. Puts a big smile on my face.

You know what’s funny. The first track has now been identified from the press release as “the manchester track”. Therefore, any REAL leak will be VERY EASY to identify as it will have the already leaked LIVE “manchester track” as the #1 track. CASE CLOSED. Stop reporting fake leaks. What.CD members have to stop smoking cigars in their smoking jackets and get real. Pre-order the album and be ready! :D

I’m kind of disappointed. The production is very ’90s and the track itself is mediocre. Pitchfork and the rest of them are praising it for its modern sound, which I just don’t get. It might be the hype which got to me, but I expected something else.

I’ve changed my mind, I prefer minipops to Ganzfeld. Interesting that you should use the word moreish. That melody was in my head from this morning, and by this evening I was gasping to hear the track again. I spend a lot of time listening to a lot more music these days, I enjoy myself a lot, but the endless variety makes it pretty rare to have that raw compulsion. I’d say parts of minipops sound rather like mid-period Plaid – the combination of particular synths and jazz chords at an easy tempo. It’s the melody and chords that intrigue me, there is something very retro about them, it’s that line of British jazz and futuristic cinematics that somehow permeated into early warehouse music and then through IDM.

Also, saw this comment from a guy who attended the London show: “Just come out from the London listening party… Setup was a memory stick into a cdj2000, a FAT sound sysyem, a dark room with maybe 350 people… Occasional strobes, green Aphex logo lights, and of course the tunes…

Philthy, brutal, nostalgic, phuturistic, phresh, Drum and Bass and Moreish, glitched synths, Phuked up drums, ephektive, aphected, insectiod, elusive, viscious and viscous, loud, sinusiodal, squared, pushed, journey, bleee ee ee ee py, FFTea, busy, over complex, craphted, crafty and destructive, joy, pain, inspiring, dated, old school, new school – are some words that spring to mind…

There will be lovers and haters for sure, personally I couldn’t stop dancing….”
