In the nearly five years since Sufjan Stevens released The Age of Adz, he's worked with the ballet, scored a rodeo documentary, released more Christmas music, and released an album and EP with his side project Sisyphus. This year, he's releasing a new full-length. Carrie & Lowell is out March 30 in Europe and March 31 in North America via Asthmatic Kitty. Watch the album's trailer below.
According to a press release, the album was named for Stevens' mother and stepfather, and its 11 songs are about "life and death, love and loss, and the artist's struggle to make sense of the beauty and ugliness of love." It's also billed as a return to Stevens' "folk roots," according to the press release.
Collaborators on the album include Casey Foubert, Laura Veirs, Nedelle Torrisi, Sean Carey, Ben Lester, and Thomas Bartlett.
It’s been too long. I cannot wait.
I was just talking to a friend the other day and saying I always wanted to see him, but I wasn’t crazy about Age of Adz. Wish granted!
Just peed my pants and cried a bit.
I cried. I’m so ready for this. Seeing him in June for the tour!
so hyped for this
Shame to hear the move back to the folk roots given how jaw droppingly beautiful Age of Adz was with the perfect balance of folk harmony and epic electronic symphony. Still, definitely hyped.
What did you think about the last bit of that preview? The song definitely sounded like it had more of the folk roots, but it kinda to me sounded like there was still hints of his experimental vibes at the end of it.
agreed, i love his folky but age of adz was mind melting, underrated imo
Can’t wait for this album. I thought “Age of Adz” was an interesting approach but it didn’t click with me. So I’m glad to see him return to his folk roots with this one.
What did you think about All Delighted People?
I liked “All Delighted People,” interesting stuff. I don’t understand why it’s an EP when it’s about an hour long, haha.

Buying for sure, thanks AKR!!!
Have we missed the boat on the clear vinyl for pre-orders?
Also any local NYC shops taking vinyl preorders? The “Local Record Store” link from the carrieandlowell.com page just goes to record store day.
@johnbeeler Also wondering the same thing regarding the clear vinyls!
Yep, give your local record store a call. Other Music in NYC had _some_ – not sure if they still do. My fingers are crossed for you both to get some.
If it’s your boat, we will be putting up a preorder for cassettes in a few weeks.
Looks like these guys might have some:
