Depeche Mode, the synthpop originators who became dark-pop elder statesman, have just announced plans for a new studio album, the follow-up to 2009?s Sounds Of The Universe. The new one is called Delta Machine, and hopefully that title does not imply that they’re trying to make electronic blues now. Ben Hillier produced the album, and longtime collaborator Flood mixed it. A deluxe edition will include a 28-page book full of Anton Corbijn photos, and first single “Heaven” will also come with remixes from people like Matthew Dear and Blawan.

The best part of this news? A looming Depeche Mode arena tour. They’ve only announced European dates thus far, but American ones will surely follow. I saw them headline Lollapalooza on the Sounds Of The Universe tour, and I can say in full confidence that you should go see them if you get a chance. Check the album’s tracklist below.

Listen to second single "Soothe My Soul" below.

Yes full album has leaked. After first 2 listens I was not blown away but many songs had my attention.Huge Depeche fan from the beginning. That said I always have big expectations. This album does have a few question mark songs no doubt but overall I am happy with it.For me the better songs are”Welcome To My World” “Heaven” “Secret To The End” “Alone””Broken” “Soothe My Soul” and for me the best of all that is classic Mode ” Should Be Higher” ..”Soft Touch” is not bad as well …I love what Martin brings vocaly to Depeche but with that I have his only song “The Child Inside” a big question mark. C’Mon Martin!

Also what is “Goodbye”? It’s as if “Personal Jesus” had an unwanted bastard child and was left neglected to.I hope I am not too critical because overall It is much better than Sounds Of The Universe… This is clear..

The album is very BAD ! The recording sounds like it was recorded in a bedroom. Bad Production team bad mixing and the synth sounds are very poor.

DEPECHE is dying slowly with every album since ULTRA, just like a cancer patient.

This guys have no musical inspiration left no motivation -just making an album every 4 years to get your money. Songs are so bad – you can’t even listen the whole song…

Just listened to the album. Much, much better that SOTU and PTA. Actually, it’s the first album since Ultra that contains no song that I would want to skip. A great comeback. They’ve really made a great job with Delta Machine.

After so much hoping and anticipation….. no! In my eyes they’ve lost their “magic touch” i miss their compelling synth-compositions and orchestral layered music. Its sad to say but they have become one of many electronic bands out there, not standing out in the crowd anymore! Besides “should be higher” and “angel” i really don’t like much of the songs on this album! A 20+ year Devotee

    I give it a 5 out of 10.
Martin, I’ve got a great idea….No guitars on the next CD. 100% synth please. Your fans would love this! Yes, you can play the guitar well, but we want the old DM back!

Stopped expecting much innovation and breakthrough in sound and concept in their music long time ago. They’ve finished with that since SOFAD. I think DM are different band since then, and that’s not a bad thing at all. Among last 5 albums (including Delta…) it’s hard to name 10 good memorable DM songs – I’m sad to say that. Suffer Well and Nothing’s Impossible, I dare to say, are their peaks since 90’s – maybe Dave as an author have more potential to be concentrated on. Anyway, I’m still grateful and excited to hear anything new they pull out. They are still great and different comparing to majority of music we are witnessing today… Their main problem is production! Songs are still great. You can recognize typical DM style melodically as well as lyrically but production is so unconvincing and killing the potential of the songs. (Making an album with vintage equipment is nice experiment once, but then, they should really leave it – it gets you nowhere. More or less guitars… more or less synths… more or less blues/soul or more or less electronic is irrelevant. Next time if they decide to go and make an album they should concentrate on the simple song structure, PRODUCTION, and ARRANGEMENTS… I don’t expect them to repeat Black celebration or Violator or SOFAD… why should they – they did it already  They should just bring the clear musical ideas they obviously have and wrap them in clear harmonies and production that those songs deserve.

WHY DM SONGS are BAD TODAY?

Remember the USA – Russian Space race? Well, the race is over and the USA doesn’t even have a spaceship anymore – they are using the Russian Soyuz. How ironic!

WHY DM SONGS are BAD TODAY?

Remember the USA – Russian Space race? Well, the race is over and the USA doesn’t even have a spaceship anymore – they are using the Russian Soyuz. How ironic!

Same with DM, the Electronic Race is over and DM have nothing to prove anymore. They are lost in space! Wrong decisions for albums (SOTU) recorded with vintage synths Martin bought from Ebay with bad production and recording… Again Delta Machine WRONG DIRECTION with stock blues themes and primitive Guitars – GOD ! Delta Machine sounds more like U2 than Depeche ! WHAT A JOKE!

DEPECHE MODE FORMULA = MARTIN songs as raw demos enter HEAVY STUDIO PRODUCTION – Sounds were produced by ALAN WILDER + FLOOD (The producer behind VIOLATOR and SOFAD)

DAVE is just the Voice, MARTIN is useless in Studio, and ANDY FLECH is an EXTRA (a useless band member- he can only press 2 synth keys at the same time, and claps his hands in concerts)

The Depeche Magic sound is the atmospheric mysterious and dark SYNTH orchestration (Intensive STUDIO WORK) and sung by a BARITONE voice composed by MARTIN GORE. Martin Gore native style is not Depeche style. Martin songs were always changed, manipulated, and Depeche Style coated in heavy production. WELL ! NOT ANYMORE !

The reason DM is still popular is because of INERTIA from old times and some DM funboys clapping at any garbage they produce (see Apple funboys)

The DM quality degraded so much with every album since ULTRA , the electronic race is over, they have nothing to prove anymore, however the quality Should be Higher !

I’ve got a feeling that the best 2007-2013 DM album is Soulsavers “the light the dead see” but it’s not DM anyway ….

In response to previous post .. I can personally think of alot more than 10 memorable songs of last 5 albums … Look you might think of yourself as a Depeche Mode fan and im sure you are but at the same time if you don’t care for much of themusic a band puts out over a 10 year period then maybe Depeche is not for you as a whole but you enjoy some of their hits.I have friends that love depeche Modes hits but dont like most of their songs ….nothing wrong with that at all but also it doesn’t mean that there is necassarily something wrong with Depeche Mode either

Anybody else feel same way? First listen i hated “Secret To The End” but after several listens I love this song now .Also felt nothing much about “Welcome To My World” but i love that song now as well …to me this song is a bit like world in my eyes only little darker but to me thats great …..too many people looking for pop depeche mode …that has never bee their style. DM is not a pop band never was ….they make obscure songs but at the same time can be beautiful

To me this album even without hearing delux songs …is much better than Universe,Exciter and Ultra …Ultra i know many fans liked but for me it was good first half record but then got lost in the second half with exception of freestate.. There is a good 6-7 strong songs off of Delta Machine …Is it Violator or SOFAD ? It lacks the blow you away songs that Violator had and possibly the overall production strength SOFAD had …I like everyone else would love for Wilder to be back on board but that is yesterday. If you stop comparing albums to other albums it makes it alot easier to accept an album for what it is.Also when a band has had so much success with so many great songs over 14 albums …its easy to have unrealistic expectations….Remember this. All those great songs didn’t come off of 1 or 2 albums …they have been around for ever …and every album DM has ever put out typically has 2-3 songs that will even get played in future concerts …or for that matter have made it onto the greatest hits CD…How about give DM some credit they have had many more good-to great albums than they have had bad ones right? Now how many bands have pulled that off over a period of 14 albums??

    Playing the Angel
    Sounds of the Universe
    Delta Machine

These albums are produced by the same producer Ben Hillier. That means he created the sounds theme and orchestration, transforming Martin demos in what you got on albums. The sound is the same across all 3 albums he produced.

Remember that Martin is no good in Studio (Martin admitted he hates studio production) Dave is no good either and Andy Fletcher is an EXTRA (a useless band member – he can only press 2 synth keys at the same time, and claps his hands in concerts)

So if Martin can’t, who the hell makes the Depeche album? The producer Ben Hillier! But he did a bad job on Delta Machine and also Martin since he stopped drinking, can’t compose good songs anymore.

Depeche Mode sound was created by the Producers:

    Daniel Miller,
    Gareth Jones
    FLOOD
    and the ex-member Alan Wilder

Today Depeche Mode sounds like the Irish Band U2, DM are lost in space!

Gosh, are you even aware that Flood was responsible for mixing this album as well??

And did we listen to the same albums or each one of the Hillier trilogy has it’s own uniqueness in sound, very clear for all of us to hear? You may hate all three of them, of course, but they’re NOT the same sound!

Depeche mode have been around a long time and a lot of people seem to be stuck in a certain DM moment, and is desperatley trying to relive this with the anticipation of each new release .
Evey album has had its moments some better than others..
DEPECHE MODE are about moving with their flow.. we are getting old with these guys and at the end of the day there is a reason why they are still around 30+ years later… Let go and listen..
Delta Machine is a great album.
    Just give it a chance..

This album is really pretty bad. The only song that is semi-decent is “Should Be Higher”. Most of the songs are extremely boring, meandering melodies, a complete lack of strong hooks. Most of the production is fairly mediocre as well, nothing particularly exciting. Most of all, there is absolutely nothing memorable about anything on this album. I wouldn’t be excited about hearing any of these songs live, most people will be going to the bathroom when they play anything from this record. Martin needs to go back and write better songs. His song “The Child Inside” is probably in the top 10 worst songs ever written.
