Taylor McFerrin works at his own pace. The title of his debut album, Early Riser, is almost a winking acknowledgement of this by the New York-based polymath—talk of his debut first emerged in 2011, and after a lengthy gestation period, it's finally being released on June 3 via Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder imprint. "The Antidote" finds McFerrin in producer mode, passing off vocal duties to Melbourne's Nai Palm to make a slice of glitchy Sunday-afternoon funk that possesses a stitched-together looseness without wandering too far into the wilderness. This frees his collaborator from having to stick to conventional structure, and her contribution is as free-form as the swirling but assured foundation it's built on.
