Paul Gilbert, the legendary guitar shredder best known for his bands Racer X and Mr. Big, took time out of his recording schedule to join Shawn and Corbs of The GuitCast podcast to talk about his early music education, his online 'Rock Guitar School, his signature Ibanez guitars and a new solo album.
Ranked as one of the fastest players of all time, Paul Gilbert began his musical education by listening to his Uncle's rock n roll albums outside of Greensburg, Pennsylvania. He has since led the metal band 'Racer X' and the chart topping 'Mr. Big' along side bandmates Billy Sheehan (bass), Pat Torpey (drums) and lead singer Eric Martin.
While talking with Shawn and Corbs of The GuitCast, he revealed he's in the mixing stage of his new solo album which will be called "I Can Destroy". Legendary record producer Kevin Shirley handled the production on the album. Shirley has produced some of the top rock n roll albums of all time with artists including Aerosmith, Journey, Dream Theater and Iron Maiden to name a few.
The title 'I Can Destroy' was inspired by his young son's penchant for smashing things. Gilbert says: "The stuff he really loves the most [is what he] can tear up and destroy. That's how he's discovering the world. He picks it up in his hands and says 'can I crush it, can I eat it, can I bang it on the ground?" The longer title 'I Love Anything That I Can Destroy' was shortened for brevity.
