South Korean three piece, Jambinai (잠비나이) will release their second album, 'Hermitage' (은서/隱棲), this summer. It will be the band's first release since 2012's 'Difference' (차연), and will mark their début on Bella Union.
The band members use contemporary instruments and Korean traditional instruments, such as haegum, piri and geomungo to produce a unique, cacophonous sound that sounds both cutting-edge and with roots stemming deep into the past. They met while studying traditional music at South Korean's National University of the Arts, and wanted to apply their musical training to crafting something that would introduce new audiences to Korean traditional music.
They have stated that they have been inspired by the angst and isolation felt by many young Koreans. Speaking about one of the cuts from from the new album 'Deus Benedicat Tibi', guitarist Ilwoo Lee said: “Nowadays, especially in Korea, many give up their dreams because life gets worse every day. We have the world’s highest suicide rate. Our song expresses a person who overcomes all hardship and suffering. I dedicate this song to the people who live in pain, to say, ‘You are the king in your own life’”.
