Lil Nas X seemed like the epitome of a one-hit-wonder. His country-trap-hit "Old Town Road" caught on on Tik Tok in 2019 through meme potential and became subject to politicization after Billboard dropped it from the country charts. What could wound up a mere novelty became an immense, record-breaking hit and put Lil Nas X on the radar of mainstream music.

Since "Old Town Road", the self-proclaimed "power bottom 'rapper'" has had several hits including "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)", the title track to his full-length debut. It was yet another piece of controversy and proof of his staying power and versatility. Lil Nas X's debut album has been announced to drop on September 17.
