To witness a performance by Body/Head is to behold a writhing ouroboros: Kim Gordon and Bill Nace joining forces to raise up improvisational megaliths that, however unwieldy, feel inevitable and immovable. The duo has showcased this gravitas over the past few years through a handful of releases, most recently on 2014's The Show Is Over EP — but like Swans and Darkside, Body/Head are at their best when they're basking beneath the glow of the house lights, feeding off the energy between themselves, their instruments and the surrounding crowd.
Such sorcery typically constitutes a "you had to be there" kind of deal — but fortunately for those not in attendance, Gordon and Nace have bottled up that feeling on their new live record No Waves. Arriving November 11 via Matador, the release chronicles Body/Head's intense, churning performance at the 2014 Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tenn. The track list may seem modest, but don't be fooled: The sprawling takes often push the boundaries separating one song from the next, as evidenced by the 20-minute-plus twofer of "Abstract" and "Actress" that closes out the record.
