Shane Crump is best known as the bassist for screamo lifers Alesana, but there’s so much more to him than that, as his new project the Ivory proves. His debut single under the moniker, “I’m A Mess,” is a soulful piano-based rock song that could’ve come off a Straylight Run or Jack’s Mannequin record—maybe even something by the Fray. Crump explains:
“The Ivory represents a breakup that absolutely destroyed me. I found out she cheated on me. I loved her, it hurt and music was my only outlet. The heartbreak of our breakup made me want to express my feelings I felt about losing someone while still feeling deeply connected. I feel like most people go through that at some point… so, I wrote a song. This song is for all the broken hearts that have not been mended yet. I know the feeling… you’re not alone.”
